How Many Followers Does F4F Actually Get You?

A committed evening in a busy exchange gets you a few dozen. A committed month gets you one or two thousand, minus the leak. And on Instagram the whole career has a hard ceiling at 7,500, which nobody mentions until they hit it.

Most articles about follow for follow argue philosophy. This one is just the numbers: what the method returns per hour in each venue, what evaporates afterwards, and where the arithmetic stops entirely.

A note on where these figures come from, because precision would be dishonest: no platform publishes exchange statistics. The ranges below are what participants consistently report and what we see across the F4F rooms we run. Treat them as the shape of the thing, not as a promise.

Per-hour rates, by venue

The venue decides your rate more than your effort does. Same method, wildly different returns:

Two patterns worth noticing. First, the gap between hashtags and everything else is enormous, and it's why the hashtag era of F4F is effectively over. Second, every high-rate venue works for the same reason: the people there chose to be there. Reciprocity is the entrance fee, so most of them pay it.

What a week and a month look like

Take a middle figure of 30 follow-backs per focused hour in a good room, and say you put in an hour most evenings.

• A week: five or six hours, somewhere around 150 to 180 new followers.

• Three months: approaching 2,000 gross, if your patience survives.

Participants who actually track their numbers tend to describe losing something like a fifth to a third of exchange gains over the following weeks. Using the month above: 700 gross becomes maybe 500 kept, and the fade continues at a slower rate after that.

The ceiling: 7,500 on Instagram

Here's the piece of arithmetic that ends the argument on Instagram, and it's a platform rule rather than an estimate: Instagram caps every account at following 7,500 people. Not a guideline, a hard limit; the app refuses the 7,501st follow.

F4F spends your following count as currency. Every follower you gain costs one follow you give. So the theoretical maximum an Instagram account can ever earn through pure exchange is 7,500 followers, and the practical maximum is far lower, because a share of the people you follow never reciprocate and farmers claw back what they gave.

The accounts you occasionally see with 7,4xx following and a similar follower count aren't a coincidence. That's what a finished F4F career looks like: fully spent, nothing left to trade.

What the number costs per unit

Flip the arithmetic into cost-per-follower and the comparison with every alternative gets stark.

At 30 an hour, one exchange follower costs you two minutes of active work, forever unfollowable-back, plus its share of the leak. A thousand kept followers is comfortably north of 40 hours once leakage is counted. If your time is worth anything at all to you, exchange followers are among the most expensive followers there are; the payment is just invisible because it never touches your wallet.

An exchange moves three counters at once:

1. Followers, up. The goal.
2. Following, up in lockstep. The tell. Anyone who opens your profile can divide one number by the other, and near-1:1 ratios read as exchange accounts to brands, to platforms and to sharp-eyed visitors.

Farmers collected your follow-back and left, and ordinary churn did the rest. Losing a chunk of any exchange gain in the following weeks is normal, which is exactly why the method has to be maintained rather than finished.

Is there any way to keep the followers without the following count?

Not inside an exchange: the reciprocal follow is the deal. Unfollowing afterwards breaks the deal (people notice, and rooms ban for it) and in bulk it trips spam detection. If you want the first number without the second, the honest routes are earning followers with content or getting them delivered, free or paid.
