Instagram Trial Reels: What They Are and How to Post One
Trial reels show a Reel to non-followers first. Who can use them (200 or 1,000 followers), how to post one, the 24 and 72 hour windows, and why trials stall.
Trial reels are Reels that Instagram shows to people who don't follow you before your followers see them. Meta launched them on December 10, 2024. Instagram's Help Center asks for at least 200 followers on a professional account, or 1,000 on a personal one. Your account also has to be one Instagram can recommend. After about 24 hours, you see the trial's views, likes, comments and shares. Then you can share it with everyone.
We read Instagram's Help Center as Google shows it, and Meta's own post, on October 22, 2026.
What are trial reels?
Meta's launch post says "Trial reels will be shown to non-followers first." You see how a Reel does with strangers before your followers see it. About 18,100 people search for "trial reels" each month.
| What happens | Trial reel | Regular reel |
|---|---|---|
| Who sees it first | Non-followers | Followers and others |
| On your profile grid | Once shared | Right away |
| In followers' feeds | No | Yes |
| Numbers to check | After 24 hours | Any time |

Two more rules apply. Instagram's rules speak of a public account, and that account has to be one Instagram can recommend: "If your public account is ineligible to appear in recommendations, you will also lose access to trial reels."
How do you post a trial reel?
- Make a new reel. The Help Center says "Make sure to create a new reel."
- Turn on Trial. Before sharing, "tap the toggle to turn on 'Trial.'"
- Pick auto-share or not. Instagram can share it with your followers "if we determine it's performing well based on the views it receives within the first 72 hours."
- Share it. You'll find it on your profile, where "it will appear alongside any drafts you have."
- Check it after a day. About 24 hours in, Meta says you can see "key engagement metrics in the reels viewer," including views, likes, comments and shares.
- Share it with everyone if it did well. "Once it's shared with everyone, the reel will live on your profile grid."
Can your followers see a trial reel?
Mostly not. The Help Center says "After you share your trial reel, your followers won't see it in feed or Reels." Meta adds that some still might, "in a direct message or on a page that shows reels with the same audio, location or filter."
Why does a trial reel get few views?
The Help Center names three causes.
- It's slower by design. "Trial reels may take longer to get views because they're being shown to people who don't follow you."
- It's a repost. "Your trial reel may get limited reach if Instagram detects that you've previously shared the same content."
- Your account can't be recommended. Then "you will also lose access to trial reels." Check Account Status in your Instagram settings.
Length matters too. Sprout Social lists Reels at "20 minutes (3 minutes for reach to new audiences)," and a trial goes to new audiences. So keep a trial to 3 minutes or less.
Do trial reels hurt your normal reels?
The Help Center says they don't: "Trial reels are evaluated independently in Instagram's ranking and don't impact the performance or ranking of your standard reels content."
Do trial reels work?
We found no reach figures from Instagram for trials. Meta's launch post said early testers "report that their fresh content ideas are performing well with both new audiences and existing followers." The way to judge is your own numbers: compare a trial's views after 24 hours with your usual Reels.
Should you add free views to a trial reel?
Keep outside views off a trial. Its numbers show how strangers react. Views from any free view site, ours included, would blur that. Once a Reel is shared with everyone, Hclout's free tier gives 100 free Instagram views on a public Reel, with no password. Our guide to free Instagram Reels views compares the free offers and what a normal Reel gets.
