What is a niche and why does everyone insist on one?

A niche is the specific territory an account claims: not fitness, but kettlebell training for desk workers. The insistence isn't a creativity rule. Algorithms and audiences both need to file you somewhere, and specific accounts are the ones that get filed and found.

Why specific beats broad

Recommendation systems work by clustering: they learn what an account is about from consistent signals, then route it to viewers who engage with that cluster. Tight niches classify cleanly and get routed; bit-of-everything accounts read as noise.

Audiences run the same logic at the follow decision: a specific promise wins because the viewer knows exactly what they're subscribing to. "Budget travel for students" converts; "my life and thoughts" doesn't, until you're famous.

Choosing one that can carry you

The workable test is an intersection of three things.

  • Interest: you can post about it for years without dying inside.
  • Demand: people actively search it (check TikTok search suggestions and the queries in your niche).
  • Edge: you can be distinctive in it: experience, results, personality, format.

Small first, broad later

Small niches feel limiting and rank fastest: less competition, cleaner classification, faster authority. Broadening WORKS from a base: accounts widen successfully after the niche built the audience, rarely before.

Operationally, the niche becomes your content pillars, and the pillars become the calendar. That chain is what consistency actually looks like from inside.

Common questions

Is my niche too small?

Probably not: if real people search it and a competitor exists, it can carry an account. Too small looks like zero search interest and zero adjacent creators.

Can I have two niches?

One account, one niche works best for growth. Two real niches usually deserve two accounts; a forced blend confuses the classification both depend on.

When should I broaden?

When the niche audience is genuinely yours: strong engagement, recognisable identity. Broaden one adjacent step at a time and watch retention.
