What is reach?

Reach is the number of different people who saw your content at least once. One person counts once, no matter how many times they saw it. It answers the simplest question in analytics: how many people did this actually get to?

Reach in plain numbers

Say your reel was shown 5,000 times, but 2,000 of those were repeat displays to the same people. Your impressions are 5,000. Your reach is 3,000. Three thousand different humans saw it.

Platforms split reach into two parts: followers and non-followers. The non-follower part is the interesting one. It tells you whether the platform is carrying your content to strangers on surfaces like Explore and the For You page. A post where 95% of reach is followers grew your audience by nothing.

Why reach is the honest denominator

The best version of engagement rate divides by reach, not by followers. Here's why.

Your follower count includes people who quit the app years ago and ghost followers who never react to anything. Dividing by them punishes you for history. Dividing by reach asks a fairer question: of the people who actually saw this post, how many cared?

What the public sees instead of reach

Reach is private. Only you see it in your analytics. What the public sees is the view count under your videos, and people treat that as your reach.

That gap matters. A reel showing 200 views gets judged as unseen, even if its true reach was fine. The private number tells YOU how distribution went. The public number decides how the NEXT viewer treats the post. They are different jobs.

How to grow reach

Reach follows engagement, not the other way round. The platform shows your post to a small test group, watches what they do, and widens or stops based on the result.

  • Strong opening seconds on video. Most of the decision happens before second three.
  • Saves and shares push reach hardest, because they show people valued the content.
  • Post when your audience is online. Early reactions decide the test.
  • Check reach by post format in your analytics. Most accounts find one format clearly out-reaches the rest, and the answer is usually short video, as the algorithm guides explain.

Common questions

What is the difference between reach and impressions?

Reach counts people, impressions count displays. If one person sees your post four times, that's reach 1 and impressions 4.

Why did my reach suddenly drop?

The usual causes: you posted less, a format change, or the platform stopped recommending your content to non-followers. Check the follower vs non-follower split first. If non-follower reach collapsed to almost zero, read about the shadowban pattern.

Can I buy reach?

Not directly, because reach is a private analytic. You can buy the public numbers people treat as reach, like views, and you can rent real reach with ads through boosting.
