Can You Hide Your Following List on Instagram?

Not on a public account. A private account limits your lists to approved followers. Removing and blocking, what Mosseri said, and the scam shield.

Not on a public account. Instagram's own topic page says it "has no native toggle to hide only your followers or following list" on a public profile. The one official way is a private account, which "limits both lists to approved followers only" on Instagram. You can also remove or block the people you don't want looking. In June 2026, Adam Mosseri said the team hears the request "from time to time," Kontentino reported.

We read Instagram's pages as Google shows them, plus Kontentino and SWGFL, on October 23, 2026. We didn't change settings on a live account.

Who can see your followers and following lists?

Removed followerNot them, if private
Blocked personNot them

Instagram's topic pages and Help Center as Google showed them on October 23, 2026, Kontentino of October 5, 2026, and SWGFL on Meta's October 2024 protections.

On a private account, people who don't follow you "can see the count but can't open the list," Kontentino notes. Your approved followers can still see every account you follow.

How do you hide your following list?

  1. Make your account private. It's in Settings and privacy, under Account privacy.
  2. Remove followers you don't want. The Help Center says "When you remove a follower, they aren't notified that you've removed them" at all.
  3. Block anyone who shouldn't see your profile. A blocked account can't open your profile or your lists.

Each step only works for a private account, or for the person you remove or block. There's no switch that hides your lists from everyone while you stay public.

What doesn't hide your lists?

Outfy and iGeeksBlog, as Google showed them on October 23, 2026, and Instagram's topic page.

Outfy says some users think "Close Friends or Restrict can help," and they don't. iGeeksBlog lists "Third-party apps can hide your Following" list as a myth. A video on Facebook tells people to "select 'Following' to hide the list" in Account privacy, though Instagram's page says there's no such toggle.

Will Instagram add a way to hide who you follow?

Not for now. Kontentino reports that Mosseri, asked in a June 2026 Q&A, called it something the team hears "from time to time." He said "it's maybe a thing for us to revisit" later. Kontentino adds that "Nothing is planned, nothing is in testing" for it.

Instagram does hide lists in one case. In October 2024, Meta began "hiding follower and following lists from potential sextortion scammers," SWGFL reported. That protection runs on Instagram's side, and you can't switch it on yourself.

Should a creator or business hide its lists?

Usually not. A public account is how new people find you, and a private one stops strangers from seeing your posts too. If your account sells or grows in public, keep it public and remove or block the few people who bother you.

For a public account that wants more reach, Hclout's free tier gives 12 free Instagram likes and 100 free Instagram views on a public post, with no password, on the free page.
