How to Make a Facebook Post Shareable: Set It to Public
A Facebook post gets a Share button for everyone once its audience is Public. Change it on an old post, set Public as your default, and fix Page posts.
To make a Facebook post shareable, change its audience to Public. On a post you've already shared, tap the small audience icon next to the date, pick Public, and save. Facebook's Help Center says "You can use the audience selector to change who can see things (example: posts and photos) you share on your timeline after you share it." Guides agree on why it matters. One from February 2026, as Google shows it, says "A post on Facebook is only shareable when its privacy is set to Public."
We read Facebook's Help Center and the guides as Google shows them on October 23, 2026. We didn't change a post on a live account.
How do you make an old Facebook post shareable?
- Find the post. Open your profile and scroll to it.
- Tap the audience icon. It's the small globe, friends or lock symbol beside the date.
- Choose Public. Facebook describes Public as "Anyone can see what you share."
- Save. The Share button now shows for everyone who sees the post.
On a computer, the three dots on the post also lead there. A Facebook group answer from May 2024 says to press the "3 dots at the top right corner of your FB post" and look for the audience option.
Which audience lets people share your post?
| Audience | Who sees it | Share button |
|---|---|---|
| Public | Anyone | Shown to all |
| Friends | Your friends | Limited |
| Specific friends | People you pick | Limited |
| Only me | You | None |
Facebook Help Center pages on post audiences, and guides as Google showed them on October 23, 2026.
The Help Center says "People who can see your post on Facebook can also see the audience you chose to share with." So the audience icon on a post tells you whether it's public before anyone tries to share it.
How do you make all your future posts shareable?
Set Public as your default audience. Facebook's Help Center says "Setting a default audience selects the audience for your future posts." Go to Settings & privacy, then Settings, then Posts, and find who can see your future posts. SocialBee's July 2025 guide gives the same path: "Go to 'Settings and Privacy'" and "Find 'Posts'."
You can also pick the audience each time you post. The Help Center says to tap "What's on your mind?" and use the audience selector there.
Why can't people share my Facebook post?
The audience is the usual reason. If the post is set to Friends or a custom list, people outside that audience can't see it, let alone share it. Two other cases come up often:
- Page posts. The Help Center says "Default audience settings for Page posts are different from settings for profile posts." Check the Page's own settings.
- Group posts. A post in a private group stays with the group. A Reddit answer from December 2022 says people can share content from a public group by going "through to the original content."
Does a shareable post reach more people?
It can, because every share puts it in front of a new set of friends. If you run a Page and want more likes on a public post, Hclout's free tier gives 20 free Facebook likes, with no password, on the free page. A short Cloudflare check runs before each claim.
