How to See Deleted Messages on Messenger, and Archived Ones
Most deleted Messenger chats can't come back, but many were only archived, and those sit in your Archive folder. What else can still show a message.
Usually you can't. "Deleted Messenger messages usually cannot be recovered once they are permanently removed from an account," Findmykids' July 2026 guide says. But a lot of chats people think they deleted were only archived, and those come straight back. Messenger's help center says "archived chats are not deleted unless you choose to delete them, and you can view them in your Archive folder anytime."
We read Messenger's help center as Google showed it on October 23, 2026, along with guides from Findmykids (July 3, 2026) and Airdroid (updated June 25, 2026).
"How to see deleted messages on messenger" gets about 12,100 searches a month, and "how to recover deleted messages on messenger" another 3,600.
Was the chat deleted, or just archived?
| What happened | Can you see it again? |
|---|---|
| You archived it | Yes, in your Archive folder |
| You deleted it for yourself | Ask the other person |
| It was deleted for good | Usually not |
| It arrived recently, on Android | Maybe, in Notification History |
Messenger's help center and Airdroid's guide, as read on October 23, 2026.
It's worth checking the archive first. It's "the most common 'mistake' and the easiest fix," Airdroid's guide says. A Reddit user found in September 2025 that the bin icon after swiping a chat "is actually for the archive" in their app.
How do you find archived chats on Messenger?
- Open Messenger and tap the menu.
- Tap Archive, or Archived, depending on your version.
- Find the chat, or search the person's name from your main Chats screen.
To move it back to your inbox, send the person a new message. "You can unarchive a chat and add it back to your inbox by sending the person a new message. Opening a conversation will not unarchive it," Messenger's help center says.
There's one exception: "You cannot unarchive a chat that was archived as part of upgrading to end-to-end encryption," the help center notes. You can still read it in the Archive folder.
What happens when someone deletes or unsends a message?
It depends on who deleted it and how:
- Deleted for you. The chat leaves your side only. You "can delete the entire chat from your account, but it is still available on the other person's account," Findmykids says. So asking them is the one real way back.
- Unsent. The message is gone for both of you. If you think it broke the rules, "you can report it by tapping and holding on a message next to it," Messenger's help center says.
Can notification history or a data download help?
Only a little. On Android, Notification History can show a message's preview, but Airdroid warns it "must be enabled before the messages arrive. It cannot capture past notifications retroactively."
A Facebook data download won't reliably bring them back either. Findmykids sums it up: "Notification history, Facebook data downloads, and Secure Storage may show limited information, but none guarantee access to deleted messages."
What about apps that promise to recover them?
Be careful. If Meta can't bring a deleted message back, an outside app has nothing to restore. Many of these apps ask for your Facebook login, and handing that over puts your whole account at risk. If you've already done it, our guide on how to change your Facebook password covers the fix, and Facebook account recovery covers getting back in.
On Instagram, our guides to seeing deleted Instagram messages and deleting Instagram messages cover the same questions there. Hclout's free tier gives 20 free Facebook likes on a public post, with no password, on the free page. A short Cloudflare check runs before each claim.
Frequently asked questions
Can you see deleted messages on Messenger?
Usually not. Check your Archive folder first, since many chats are only archived.
How do I unarchive a chat on Messenger?
Send the person a new message. Opening the chat alone won't move it back.
Can I see a message someone unsent?
No. It's removed for both of you, though you can report it if it broke the rules.
Does a Facebook data download include deleted messages?
Don't count on it. Findmykids says a download may show limited information but doesn't guarantee deleted messages.
Can the other person still see a chat I deleted?
Yes, if you deleted it only for yourself. It stays on their side.
