How to See Deleted Messages on Instagram, and Unsent Ones
Instagram says deleted messages can't be restored, and unsent ones leave its data download too. What you can still see, and what apps can't do.
You mostly can't. Instagram's Help Center says "deleted messages on Instagram cannot be restored," and that includes its Recently deleted folder. Unsent messages are gone from the chat for both people. Instagram's data download leaves them out too, since it "doesn't include messages that you've unsent," the Help Center says. There are two exceptions. A message you deleted "for you" still sits in the other person's chat. And a notification preview may have shown the text before anyone unsent it.
We read Instagram's Help Center and the guides as Google shows them on October 23, 2026. We didn't test this on a live account.

"Delete for you" only removes a message from your side. The Help Center's steps are to "Tap and hold a message you've sent or received," then tap Delete for you. The other person keeps their copy, so asking them is the one real way back to it.
How do you see unsent messages on Instagram?
You can't, inside Instagram. You "cannot simply reopen Instagram and see a deleted or unsent message again in the chat," Unpost's May 2026 guide says. The trace that's left is outside the chat. A Reddit answer from January 2026 says unsending "will not delete the notification they already received," so the alert stays without the text. Instagram doesn't announce it either. There's no push notification saying "[Name] unsent a message," a June 2026 video notes, as Google shows it.
Does downloading your Instagram data show deleted messages?
Only messages that still exist. Some guides say a data download is the easiest way to see deleted messages. Instagram's own page disagrees for unsent ones, since the file "doesn't include messages that you've unsent" at all. mSpy's community answer of March 2026 says there's "no official way to restore it" once a DM is gone. It adds that "you can only export messages that still exist" on the account.
The download is still useful as a backup before you delete anything. An Instagram reel from April 2025 shows where messages sit in it, under "your instagram activity > messages > inbox" in the files.
What about apps that recover deleted Instagram messages?
Treat them with care. If Instagram can't restore deleted messages from its own servers, an outside app can't either. The Help Center says "you have up to 15 minutes to edit" a message after sending it. Unsending has no deadline, but the Help Center warns that "the people you sent it to may have already seen your message" by then.
