How to Delete Instagram Messages, or Unsend Them

Hold a message and tap Unsend to remove it for everyone, or Delete for you to clear only your side. Delete a whole chat from your inbox. Every step.

Instagram has three ways to remove messages, and each one reaches a different place. To take back a message you sent, hold it and tap Unsend. It disappears for everyone in the chat. To clear a message from your side only, hold it and tap Delete for you. To remove a whole chat from your inbox, hold the chat and tap Delete. Only Unsend takes a message away from the other person.

We read Instagram's Help Center as Google showed it on October 23, 2026, along with guides from Mochi (October 7, 2026), Unpost and Airdroid. Instagram's help pages refuse our reader, so its steps are quoted from Google's view of them.

"How to delete instagram messages" and "how to delete messages on instagram" get about 14,800 searches a month each, and both are up 26%.

How do you unsend a message on Instagram?

Instagram's Help Center gives these steps:

  1. "Tap Messages at the bottom."
  2. "Select the conversation and go to the message you'd like to unsend."
  3. "Tap and hold the message."
  4. "Tap Unsend."

"Once you unsend a message, it will no longer be visible to people included in the chat," the Help Center says. It also warns that "the people you sent it to may have already seen your message." Unsent messages leave your records too, since your Data Download "doesn't include messages that you've unsent," it says.

There's no deadline. "Instagram does not have a time limit on the unsend feature," Airdroid's guide says, so old messages can go too. You can only unsend messages you sent, Mochi's guide notes. On a computer, hover over the message, open its menu and select Unsend.

Does the other person find out? Unpost's guide, updated October 19, 2026, says Instagram sends no notice that you unsent something. "They can still tell," it adds, if they read it first, saw it in a notification preview, or notice a gap in the chat.

How do you delete a message only for yourself?

Use Delete for you. Instagram's Help Center lists these steps:

  1. "Tap Messages at the bottom."
  2. "Tap a conversation."
  3. "Tap and hold a message you've sent or received."
  4. "Tap Delete for you."

To clear several at once, "Tap Select next to each message you want" to remove, the Help Center says. Keep in mind that "deleting messages in your conversation does not delete them for others," it adds. The other person keeps every one.

How do you delete a whole Instagram chat?

Instagram's Help Center gives three steps:

  1. "Tap Messages at the bottom."
  2. "Tap and hold on the conversation you'd like to delete."
  3. "Tap Delete, then tap Delete to confirm."

On an iPhone you can also swipe left on the chat, Mochi's guide says. In a web browser, open the chat's details and select Delete chat.

This only clears your inbox. "The other participant can still see the chat and its messages unless they delete it from their own inbox," Mochi's guide says. Think before you tap, since Instagram's Help Center says "deleted messages on Instagram cannot be restored." Our guide to seeing deleted Instagram messages explains what's still left afterward.

Can you delete all Instagram messages at once?

Not on every account. "Bulk deletion is not consistently available across every Instagram account or device," Mochi's guide says. If your inbox doesn't let you select several chats, you'll have to delete them one at a time. One Reddit user wrote in May 2026 that on Android, a "Delete More" prompt shows up after you delete a chat and lets you pick more.

Outside tools sell bulk deletion. Redact lists it as a Premium feature, and Unpost's free plan stops at 50 deletions a day. Mochi's advice is to "be cautious with browser extensions or unofficial services that ask for your Instagram login." Handing your login to an app gives it your whole account.

Can you delete Instagram messages from both sides?

Only the ones you sent, by unsending them. Messages the other person sent stay in their chat whatever you do. Unpost's guide says unsending hundreds of messages "one long-press at a time" isn't practical.

For future chats, disappearing messages do the cleanup. When they're on, "messages you then send will disappear after the default time," Instagram's Help Center says. Swipe up in a chat to turn them on, and swipe up again to turn them off.

Can you edit a message instead of deleting it?

Yes, if you're quick. "When you send a message to someone on Instagram, you have up to 15 minutes to edit it," the Help Center says. Instagram announced editing on March 4, 2024. Press and hold the message, then pick Edit.

Before you clear your inbox

If you sell through DMs, save order details and promises first. Mochi's guide says to keep "the necessary business information" before removing a chat. Our guide to turning off read receipts on Instagram covers the other inbox setting people ask about. If you're growing an account, Hclout's free tier gives 12 free Instagram likes on a public post, with no password, on the free page. A short Cloudflare check runs before each claim.

Frequently asked questions

How do I delete Instagram messages on both sides?

Unsend each message you sent. Messages the other person sent can't be removed from their side.

Does Instagram notify someone when you unsend a message?

Unpost's guide says it doesn't. They may still have read the message or seen a preview first.

No. Airdroid's guide says there's no time limit, so older messages can be unsent too.

Does deleting an Instagram chat delete it for the other person?

No. It only clears your inbox, and they keep the whole chat.

Can I get back an Instagram chat I deleted?

Can I delete all my Instagram messages at once?

Not on every account or device. Without a way to select several chats, they go one at a time.
