An Instagram note is a short message, up to 60 characters, that sits at the top of your followers' inbox and on your profile. Instagram's Help Center says people "will see your note at the top of the inbox and your profile for up to 24 hours." You pick who sees it, either followers you follow back or your Close Friends. And there's no list of who saw it. Below you'll find how notes work, the parts guides disagree on, and 60 note ideas we wrote that all fit.

We read Hootsuite's and InstantDM's 2026 guides through our server, and Instagram's Help Center as Google showed it, on October 23, 2026.

How do Instagram Notes work?

Feature	What applies
Length	Up to 60 characters
How long it shows	Up to 24 hours
Who sees it	Followers you follow back, or Close Friends
How many at once	One note, a new one replaces it
Who viewed it	No viewer list

Instagram Help Center as Google showed it, Hootsuite and InstantDM (October 9, 2026), read October 23, 2026.

Hootsuite's history is short: Instagram "started testing Notes in July 2022 and launched the feature widely that December," and it reached the EU and Japan in January 2023. InstantDM adds that "Posting a new one replaces the old one."

On the viewer question, both guides agree. Hootsuite says "you cannot see who viewed them." InstantDM says "You only learn about the people who liked or replied."

How do you leave a note on Instagram?

Instagram's Help Center gives these steps:

Tap your note at the top of your inbox or profile, then tap Leave a new note.
Enter a note of up to 60 characters.
Select the audience, then share it.

To add a song, Hootsuite says to tap the music icon at the top of the note screen and search Instagram's library or your connected Spotify account. InstantDM notes that "Music notes are not available in every country."

What do guides disagree on?

Two things. The first is notes on posts and Reels. Hootsuite's 2026 guide says "You can now add Notes directly to your posts and Reels." InstantDM's October 2026 guide says "Notes on feed posts and Reels were switched off in March 2025." The second is video. InstantDM says a note can carry "a 2-second looping video," and Hootsuite lists images and video as "Not supported." Instagram changes this feature often, so check what your own app shows.
