Instagram Captions: 120 Ideas and the Rules for 2026

A good Instagram caption puts its point in the first line, uses a few words people search for, and ends with no more than 5 hashtags. Instagram lets a caption run up to 2,200 characters. Since December 18, 2025, though, it allows only 5 hashtags per post or Reel, and some 2026 guides still list the old limit of 30. We checked Instagram's Help Center and announcements as Google showed them on October 23, 2026, and took search volumes from Google's Keyword Planner the same day.

Instagram's December 2025 post said "Starting today, Instagram will allow up to 5 hashtags in a reel or post." Its Help Center adds that if you include more than 5, "your comment won't post." Mellow's October 2026 guide says the limit of 5 applies to the caption and the comments alike.

Words matter more than tags now. Purdue's marketing office reported in 2022 that Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, said keywords in a caption count for more than hashtags. Buffer's October 2026 guide says "Keywords in captions and profiles are now more effective for discovery than hashtags." Google can show your posts too, if they're public and on a professional account. Instagram's Help Center says it lets search engines index public posts and Reels "uploaded or posted from January 1, 2020 onwards" from professional accounts.

How do you write a good Instagram caption?

1. Lead with the point. QuillBot says only the first 80 to 100 characters show in the main feed, so don't save the best line for last.
2. Use the words people search. Name the place, the dish or the topic in the words you'd search for.
3. Keep one idea per caption. A March 2026 Reel of caption tips put it simply: "One idea per caption."
4. Ask something easy. Metricool's 2026 study of 24.4 million posts found posts with a question got 36.70% more comments.
