Instagram Bio: 80 Ideas, the 150-Character Limit and Links

A good Instagram bio says who you are, what you post and why someone should follow, and it's got 150 characters to do it. That's the limit, in Instagram's own words: "You can write a bio of up to 150 characters on your Instagram profile." Since April 18, 2023, you can also add up to 5 links. And the words matter, because they're searchable. Instagram says its search tries "to match what you type with relevant usernames, bios, captions, hashtags and places." Instagram's Help Center adds a reminder: "anyone can see your bio." Leave out anything you wouldn't put on a sign.

How do you write a good Instagram bio?

1. Say what your account is about. Instagram's search advice is to include "keywords about who you are, and what your profile is about," as Social Media Today reported it.
2. Put your main word in your name. A handle or profile name that's related to your posts "is your best bet for showing up in relevant searches," Instagram says.
3. Add your city if you're local. "If your account is location-specific, like for a small business, sharing your location in your bio can make it easier for people in your area to find you."
4. Give a reason to follow. Say what people get and how often, like "New recipes every Sunday."
5. Finish with a link. You can add up to 5, so point the first one at what matters most.

How do you change your Instagram bio?

1. Tap your profile picture in the bottom right to open your profile.
2. Tap Edit profile at the top of the screen.
3. Tap Bio, type up to 150 characters, and save it once you're happy.

Instagram's Help Center lists the same first two steps. "How to change instagram bio" gets about 6,600 searches a month, up 22%.

How do you add links to your Instagram bio?

Open Edit profile, tap Links, then Add external link, and paste the address with a short title. Instagram announced the change on April 18, 2023, posting on X: "You can now add up to five links to your profile." TechCrunch called it Instagram taking "on Linktree and others." With 5 links, you might find you don't need a separate link page.
