Instagram Hashtags in 2026: The 5-Tag Limit and What Works

You can use up to 5 hashtags on an Instagram post or Reel. Instagram set that limit on December 18, 2025, and its @creators account explained why: "We find that using fewer (up to 5) more targeted hashtags, rather than many generic ones, can improve both your content's performance and people's experience on Instagram." Hashtags don't do much for reach anymore, though. Metricool's study of 24.4 million posts found posts with at least one hashtag got 31.70% fewer views than average. So use 3 to 5 that describe the post, and put more effort into the words of your caption.

How many hashtags can you use on Instagram?

Five per post or Reel. Instagram's announcement said it "will gradually update the number of hashtags that you can include in a caption for a reel or post to five." Before that, Social Media Today reported that Instagram had been "testing a hashtag limit on posts for the past year, with many users limited to three hashtags in the most recent experiment."

Comments count too. Instagram's Help Center says that if you include more than 5, "your comment won't post." Threads is stricter still, at one topic tag per post, according to Social Media Today.

Do hashtags still work on Instagram?

Mostly as labels. Social Media Today reports that in February 2025, Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, said hashtags "don't work" to increase reach. Instagram also dropped hashtag following on December 13, 2024, so a tag no longer feeds your post to its followers.

Metricool's numbers point the same way. It looked at 24,364,803 posts from 375,118 accounts. Posts "using at least one hashtag" saw "31.70% fewer views and 33.89% fewer interactions than the platform average." That's an average across many accounts, so it doesn't prove the tags caused the drop. Metricool's own takeaway is that it makes "natural-language captions and Instagram SEO more important."

Hashtags still help in one place, which is search. HowSociable's October 2026 guide says they tell "the algorithm and search what a post is about," and a post can still show up when someone searches that tag.

How should you use Instagram hashtags now?

1. Use 3 to 5, never more. It's the limit, and it's what Instagram itself recommends.
2. Pick tags that name your topic. Instagram favors "targeted" tags over "many generic ones," so #sourdoughbaking says more than #love.
3. Put the same words in your caption. Buffer's October 2026 guide says "Keywords in captions and profiles are now more effective for discovery than hashtags."
4. Keep them in the caption. Instagram's search advice is to "put keywords and hashtags in the caption" so a post can be found.
5. Ask a question. Metricool found posts with a question got 36.70% more comments.

What are the best hashtags for Instagram?

The best ones describe your post. Lists of "popular" tags lead with broad ones, as Woorise's August 2026 list does with #love, #instagood and #photooftheday. Tags that broad are the "many generic ones" Instagram's advice steers you away from.

"Instagram hashtag generator" gets about 12,100 searches a month, and so does "trending hashtags instagram." A generator can suggest ideas, but check each tag against your post before you use it.
