How Often Should You Post on Instagram? What 4 Studies Show

Buffer's 2.1 million posts say 3 to 5 feed posts a week is the sweet spot for growth. Dash Social found 2 to 3 best for engagement. How to pick yours.

Post 3 to 5 times a week if you want your account to grow. That's the sweet spot in Buffer's study of 2.1 million posts from 102,000 accounts. Posting 3 to 5 times "can more than double follower growth rate" compared with posting once or twice. Dash Social's study of 1.5 million brand posts found something a little different: 2 to 3 posts a week got the highest engagement rate. Both studies measured feed posts, which include Reels and carousels.

We read the four studies and Instagram's own advice through our server on October 23, 2026.

How often should you post on Instagram?

Your goalPosts a weekWhat Buffer found
Stay active1 to 2The minimum to avoid losing followers
Grow steadily3 to 5More than double the growth of 1 to 2
Grow faster6 to 9About 3.7 times the growth of 1 to 2
Grow fastest10 or moreAbout 5.5 times the growth of 1 to 2

Buffer, "How Often Should You Post on Instagram," 2.1 million feed posts from 102,000 accounts, read October 23, 2026.

Buffer says posting less than once or twice a week "could result in account stagnation or even a drop in followers." Above 5 posts, the gains keep coming, but each step adds less. Buffer calls 6 to 9 or more a week the "treat with caution" level, for full-time creators who can keep the quality up.

Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, agrees with the direction. Shopify quotes him saying "The more you post, the more your followers usually grow because more people discover you, more people share your content, and there's more content to be discovered."

Why do the studies give different numbers?

Buffer, Dash Social (August 25, 2026), Later (March 7, 2025) and HeyOrca's 2026 survey, read October 23, 2026.

They're measuring different things. Buffer counts follower growth and reach. Dash Social measured "average engagement rate," a per-post measure. A per-post rate can fall while the whole account still grows. Later just counted what accounts do. Its nano accounts, up to 10,000 followers, averaged 2 feed posts a week, micro accounts 3 and mid-size accounts 5. HeyOrca asked managers, and their answers split "almost evenly" between 2 to 3 and 4 to 5 a week.

Does posting more often hurt your reach?

Not in Buffer's data. It says "reach per post actually goes up with more frequent posting." Moving from 1 or 2 posts to 3 to 5 lifted reach per post by about 12%. Going to 6 to 9 added about 6 more points, and 10 or more added about 5 more.

Buffer's data scientist, Julian Winternheimer, warns that the raw numbers "may not tell us the full story," since big accounts grow faster and post more anyway. Buffer checked the data several ways, and it says that "no matter which angle you take, a higher posting frequency means more reach and growth" in its sample.

How often should you post Reels and Stories?

For Reels, Dash Social found that brands posting "1 to 3 Reels per week tend to see the highest engagement rates on video content."

Stories work differently. Buffer left them out of its study because they're "not typically shown to non-followers," so they won't do much to grow your account. They're good for the followers you've already got. Later found nano accounts post about 3 Stories a week and mid-size accounts about 15. Dash Social says Stories do best at "30+ posts per week or about 4 per day," judged by completion rate. Shopify calls at least once a day "a good rule of thumb."

How do you find the right number for you?

  1. Start with 3 feed posts a week. It's the bottom of Buffer's growth range and easy to keep up.
  2. Mix the formats. Dash Social suggests mixing Reels and carousels from week to week.
  3. Check Insights after a month. Compare reach and follows against the month before.
  4. Add a post only if quality holds. Buffer says the biggest jump comes from going from 1 or 2 posts to 3 to 5.
  5. Post when your followers are online. Our guide to the best time to post on Instagram compares the studies.
