Instagram Collab Posts: How to Collab, Rules and Limits

Invite up to 5 collaborators to a post or Reel, and it shows on every profile once they accept. Steps, adding collabs after posting, and what each side sees.

To collab on Instagram, make a post or Reel, tap Tag people, then Invite collaborator, pick the account and share. When they accept, the post shows on both profiles and to both sets of followers. Instagram's Help Center says "You can add up to 5 collaborators to your post," and "The person who created the post is the primary creator." The other side has to say yes, or it won't show on their profile. In the Help Center's words, "the other account can either accept or deny the request."

We read Instagram's Help Center and the guides as Google shows them on October 23, 2026. We didn't post a collab on a live account.

How do you do a collab post on Instagram?

  1. Start a post or Reel. Tap the plus sign and pick your photo, carousel or video.
  2. Go to the last screen. That's where you write the caption.
  3. Tap Tag people. Then tap Invite collaborator.
  4. Search for the account. Tap their name, and Instagram adds them as pending.
  5. Share the post. An Instagram reel from December 2025 sums it up: "Tap Next, then Share. We accept, and the reel appears on both profiles."

Until they accept, Shopify's April 2026 guide notes, the post "sits on your profile only."

What are the rules for Instagram collabs?

RuleWhat Instagram says
Collaborators per postUp to 5
Who owns itThe person who posted it
Private accountsCan be invited
Leaving a collabAny time
After postingEdit, then Add collaborators

Instagram Help Center pages on collabs, as Google showed them on October 23, 2026, and Manychat, February 9, 2026.

Older guides don't agree on the number. HeyOrca's help page still says "You can add up to 3 collaborators," but Instagram's own page says five.

Private accounts work a little differently. The Help Center says "The public original author can tag another private or public account as a collaborator." It adds that "If a public account accepts a private account's invite, the reel will be shared publicly through the public collaborator."

Can you add a collaborator after posting?

Yes. Open the post, tap the three dots, tap Edit, then tap Add collaborators. An Instagram reel from January 2025 gives the same path: "tap Edit - then tap Add Collaborators at the top of the post." The new collaborator still has to accept.

What does each collaborator see?

Both accounts share one post, so they'll see the same numbers. Manychat's February 2026 guide says "Accounts that accept a collaboration invite see all the post's likes and comments." It adds "They can remove themselves at any time."

Why do creators use collab posts?

Because one post reaches two audiences, and that's the whole appeal. A collab puts the same post in front of each collaborator's followers, and the likes and comments add up on one copy. That's why brands, friends and creators in the same niche use them for joint launches and giveaways.

Collabs work best when both accounts are public and post at the time their followers are online. Our guide to the best time to post on Instagram has the data. If you want a few more likes on the shared post, Hclout's free tier gives 12 free Instagram likes and 100 free Instagram views on a public post, with no password, on the free page. A short Cloudflare check runs before each claim.
