How to Unarchive an Instagram Story or Post
Stories move to your archive after 24 hours, and you bring one back by sharing it again or adding it to a highlight. Posts come back with Show on profile.
To unarchive a story on Instagram, go to your profile, open the menu, tap Archive, find the story and tap Share. It goes up again as a new story for 24 hours. To keep it on your profile instead, add it to a highlight. Stories don't have a true "unarchive" button, because Instagram moves every story into your archive on its own after 24 hours. Posts work differently. An archived post comes back exactly as it was with Show on profile.
We read Instagram's Help Center and announcements as Google shows them on October 23, 2026. We didn't change an archive on a live account.
How do you find your Instagram archive?
- Go to your profile. The Help Center says "Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right."
- Open the menu. It's the three lines in the top right.
- Tap Archive. It's listed "Below How you use Instagram."
- Pick the archive you want. Tap the title at the top and "select Stories archive, Posts archive or Live archive."

Sharing again makes a fresh story, so it counts views from zero and lasts another 24 hours. Taptu's guide warns that close-friends stories don't stay that way on a reshare. You have to "Choose 'Close Friends' manually again," or it goes to everyone.
A highlight is the closest thing to unarchiving. The Help Center says stories "disappear from your profile, Feed and messages after 24 hours, unless you add them to your profile as" highlights. Instagram added the stories archive and highlights together on December 5, 2017.
What if you archived a story by mistake before 24 hours?
It's still in your archive, and you can share it again from there. A Reddit answer from July 2024 says to "Go to Settings > Archive" and check the three dots on that story for options. The reshare starts a new 24 hours, though.
How do you unarchive an Instagram post?
- Open your archive. Profile, menu, Archive.
- Switch to Posts archive. Tap the title at the top.
- Open the post. Tap the three dots on it.
- Tap Show on profile. It returns to its old place on your grid.
The Help Center says archiving hides a post "from your profile and make it so your followers and other people on Instagram can't see it." Showing it again brings back its likes and comments with it, which is why archiving beats deleting. Instagram first added the archive on June 13, 2017, as "a private space, visible only to you."
How do you archive a post on Instagram?
Open the post, tap the three dots, and tap Archive. Only you can see it until you show it again. It's a good way to tidy a grid without losing anything.
If you're cleaning up your grid to grow it, Hclout's free tier gives 12 free Instagram likes and 100 free Instagram views on a public post, with no password, on the free page. A short Cloudflare check runs before each claim.
