How to See or Recover Deleted WhatsApp Messages

Only a backup made before the deletion brings a WhatsApp message back. How to restore on iPhone and Android, what you lose, and messages deleted for everyone.

By Hclout Team5 min read

You can get a deleted WhatsApp message back in one case: it was saved in a backup made before it was deleted. Then you reinstall WhatsApp and restore that backup. "A deleted WhatsApp message can only be recovered if it was saved in a backup made before you deleted it," Kanal's October 2026 guide says. If someone else deleted a message for everyone, WhatsApp won't show it to you, though an Android phone's notification history may still hold its text.

We read Kanal's guide (updated October 7, 2026) through our server, and WhatsApp's help center as Google showed it, on October 23, 2026. WhatsApp's help site turns our reader away.

"How to see deleted messages on whatsapp" gets about 49,500 searches a month, and "how to recover deleted whatsapp messages" another 27,100.

Stop before you do anything else

Don't back up now. WhatsApp's help center warns: "If you're trying to recover chats that are already missing, don't create a new backup, delete your existing backup, or factory reset your device." The reason is simple. WhatsApp keeps one backup, and "each new backup overwrites the old one," Kanal says. A fresh backup would replace the copy that still has your message.

Can you get the message back?

What happenedCan you get it back?
You tapped Delete for me seconds agoYes, tap Undo within 5 seconds
It was in a backup made before the deletionYes, by restoring that backup
No backup, or the backup ran afterNo
It was a disappearing messageNo, a restore deletes those

Check two easy things first. An archived chat is only hidden, Kanal notes, so look under Archived at the top of your Chats. And if you deleted a message only for yourself, the other person still has it. "Delete for me removes your copy and nothing else," Kanal says, so you can ask them to forward it.

How do you restore deleted messages on iPhone?

Kanal follows WhatsApp's iPhone steps:

  1. In WhatsApp, open Settings, then Chats, then Chat Backup, and check the time of the last backup. If it ran after the deletion, a restore won't help.
  2. Uninstall WhatsApp and reinstall it from the App Store.
  3. Verify your phone number and Apple ID.
  4. Tap Restore Chat History.

The number has to match the one the backup was made with, and you need enough free space on iCloud and the phone.

How do you restore deleted messages on Android?

On Android, the backup lives in your Google Account:

  1. Open the Google One app and tap Storage, then Other, to see if a WhatsApp backup exists.
  2. Uninstall WhatsApp and reinstall it from Google Play.
  3. Verify the same phone number the backup used.
  4. Tap Restore when WhatsApp offers it.

Take the restore the first time. Kanal notes there's no Restore button in the settings, since the option "appears during the initial setup."

What do you lose when you restore?

A restore swaps your current chats for the backup. Kanal lists the costs: messages "sent and received after the latest backup cannot be restored," disappearing messages are deleted, and videos only come back if Include videos was on. If you turned on an end-to-end encrypted backup, you'll need its passkey, password or 64-digit key. WhatsApp "cannot send you a copy, reset it or restore the backup for you," Kanal says.

Can you see a message someone deleted for everyone?

Not inside WhatsApp. When a sender deletes for everyone, the message is gone from the chat for you too. On Android, there's one place to look. Google's notification history, under Settings, then Notifications, keeps recent notifications if it was on when the message arrived. Kanal warns you'll only see "what fitted in the notification," without the rest of the conversation or any photos.

Be careful with apps that promise to recover any deleted message. WhatsApp keeps chat history on your phone and in your backup, so an app can't restore what neither one holds. Before you install one, check what access it asks for.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see deleted WhatsApp messages without a backup?

Usually not. WhatsApp says it can't recover deleted messages for you. On Android, notification history may show the text if it was on.

Can I undo Delete for me on WhatsApp?

Yes, if you're quick. WhatsApp gives you 5 seconds to tap Undo.

Will restoring a backup bring back everything?

It brings back what the backup held. Anything sent or received after it is lost.

Can the other person still see a message I deleted for me?

Yes. Delete for me only removes your copy.

Why shouldn't I back up right after deleting?

WhatsApp keeps one backup, so a new one replaces the copy that still had your message.
