How to Delete a WhatsApp Message, for Everyone or Just You
Tap and hold, tap Delete, then Delete for everyone. You get two days. What the other person still sees, why the option vanishes, and deleting a whole chat.
To delete a WhatsApp message, tap and hold it, tap Delete, and pick Delete for everyone or Delete for me. The first removes it from the whole chat, and the second only from your phone. Timing matters. "You have two days after you've sent a message to request to Delete for Everyone," WhatsApp's help center says. After that, you can only delete your own copy.
We read Kanal's guide (updated October 8, 2026) and Bitdefender's (updated July 24, 2026) through our server, and WhatsApp's help center as Google showed it, on October 23, 2026. WhatsApp's help site turns our reader away.
"How to delete a whatsapp message" gets about 18,100 searches a month, and "how to delete whatsapp messages" another 18,100.
Delete for me or Delete for everyone?
| Delete for me | Delete for everyone | |

| The other person sees | No change | "This message was deleted" |
| Time limit | Any time | Two days after sending |

Kanal (updated October 8, 2026), citing WhatsApp's help center, read October 23, 2026.
Kanal puts it simply: "'Delete for Me' is just a tidy-up tool. The recipient still has the message and will still respond to it."
How do you delete a WhatsApp message for everyone?
WhatsApp's help center starts the same way on every phone: "Open WhatsApp and go to the chat containing the message you want to delete," then "Tap and hold the message." From there, Kanal's steps go:
- Tap Delete, or the trash can icon.
- Tap Delete for everyone.
- Your side shows "You deleted this message," and theirs shows "This message was deleted."
To remove several at once, hold the first message, then tap the others to add them. On WhatsApp Web or Desktop, hover over the message, click the small arrow, then Delete.
Give it a few seconds on a weak connection. Kanal warns that "WhatsApp does not notify you when deleting for everyone was not successful."
What's the time limit to delete for everyone?
Two days. That's the figure WhatsApp publishes, though some sites quote longer. Kanal lists the other limits on the same help page:
- Edit a message: 15 minutes after sending.
- Delete for everyone: two days after sending.
- Delete as a group admin: two days after the message was sent.
- Undo Delete for me: 5 seconds.
Once the window closes, "the 'Delete for Everyone' option simply disappears from the long-press menu," Kanal says. You can still delete your copy, or ask the other person to delete theirs.
What does the other person still see?
The placeholder, and maybe more. Bitdefender's July 2026 update says deleting "doesn't guarantee that the content is gone forever. Recipients may have already read the message, saved screenshots, downloaded media, backed up chats, or viewed notification previews before it was deleted." Kanal adds that a notification already on their phone "is not retroactively redacted."
So if it's sensitive, assume it may have been seen. For next time, Kanal points to disappearing messages, which can vanish "24 hours, 7 days or 90 days after they are sent."
Why can't you see Delete for everyone?
Kanal lists the usual reasons:
- More than two days have passed since you sent it.
- Someone else sent it, and you aren't a group admin.
- You're offline.
- You or the recipient aren't on the latest version of WhatsApp.
In groups, "Only group admins can delete messages sent by other group members," WhatsApp's help center says. When an admin does, the placeholder names them, Kanal notes.
How do you delete a whole WhatsApp chat?
WhatsApp's help center says: "In the Chats tab, tap and hold the individual chat you want to delete," then tap Delete and Delete chat. That clears it from your phone only.
