How to Delete Your WhatsApp Account
Settings, Account, Delete my account, then your number. What it erases, why friends keep your chats, backing up first, and when WhatsApp deletes on its own.
To delete your WhatsApp account, open WhatsApp, go to Settings, then Account, then Delete my account. Enter your phone number in full and confirm. WhatsApp's help center lists what that does: it deletes your account "from WhatsApp and all your devices," erases your message history and removes you from all of your groups. If you want your chats, back them up first. There's no undo.

"Deleting your account will: · Delete your account from WhatsApp and all your devices. · Erase your message history. · Delete you from all of your WhatsApp groups," WhatsApp's help center says. Another of its pages adds that "your undelivered encrypted messages are deleted from our servers."
Your friends keep what you sent them. Guiding Tech says "Deleting your account will not have any impact on the other person's end."
How do you keep your chats before deleting?
Back them up or export them. "If you want to keep your messages, create a backup or export your chat history before you delete your account," WhatsApp's help center says. Do it before you tap Delete, since the account and its history go together.
If you run a WhatsApp channel, TunesKit's guide suggests you "delete your channel before deleting your account."
Can you get a deleted WhatsApp account back?
No. A recovery firm's August 2026 guide is blunt about it: "Once the account has gone through the in-app deletion flow it is gone, and nobody can bring it back." You can sign up again with the same number, but you'll start with an empty account. Groups are gone too. WhatsApp's help center says that if you've deleted your account, "you'll be removed from groups and lose all group chat history."
Does WhatsApp delete accounts on its own?
Yes, after long gaps. "Deactivated WhatsApp accounts are deleted 30 days after deactivation," WhatsApp's help center says, and "Inactive accounts are generally deleted after 120 days (365 days for US)." Its page on inactive accounts says they're deleted "to maintain security, limit data retention, and protect the privacy of our users."
Uninstalling the app leaves your account alone. The recovery guide says an uninstalled app "leaves the account completely intact," so you can reinstall and verify your number.
