To delete your Telegram account, go to telegram.org/deactivate in a browser and enter your phone number. Type in the code Telegram sends to your app, then choose Delete account and confirm. On an iPhone, you can also do it in the app, under Settings, Privacy and Security, If Away For, then Delete Account Now. Telegram's FAQ says deleting "cannot be undone." There's no 30-day grace period like the one Instagram and Facebook give you.

We read Telegram's FAQ and its deactivation page on October 23, 2026, along with guides from xvpn (October 1, 2026) and tech.co. We didn't delete an account ourselves.

"Delete telegram account" gets about 301,000 searches a month, and "how to delete telegram account" another 135,000. Both are up about 15%.

How do you delete your Telegram account on the website?

  1. Go to telegram.org/deactivate. Telegram's FAQ recommends "using a non-mobile browser for this process."
  2. Enter your phone number. Use the international format, with your country code, xvpn's guide says.
  3. Open Telegram to get the code. "We'll send a code to your Telegram app, not by SMS," the page says.
  4. Enter the code, then select Delete account.
  5. Enter your two-step password if you set one. xvpn notes it's the password you chose yourself, separate from the code.
  6. Add a reason if you like, then confirm.

Didn't get the code? Check every device that's still logged in, like an old phone, a tablet or Telegram Desktop, xvpn's guide says.

How do you delete your Telegram account on iPhone?

The iPhone app can do the whole thing:

  1. Open Settings, then Privacy and Security.
  2. Tap If Away For, then Delete Account Now.
  3. Tap Delete My Account, then Continue.
  4. Re-enter your phone number and tap Delete My Account.

Android and desktop apps don't have a button to delete right away, xvpn's guide says. On those, use the website steps above.

How does Telegram's self-destruct setting work?

If you're in no hurry, Telegram can delete the account for you. "If you stop using Telegram and don't come online for at least 18 months, your account will be deleted along with all messages, media, contacts and every other piece of data you store in the Telegram cloud," its FAQ says. You can change the period under Settings, Privacy and Security, If Away For.

Telegram's FAQ and xvpn's guide of October 1, 2026, read October 23, 2026.

xvpn lists 1, 3, 6, 12, 18 or 24 months. If you log back in before the time runs out, the account stays. Some guides still say the default is 6 months, including tech.co's, last updated in December 2025. Telegram's FAQ now says 18.

What happens when you delete your Telegram account?

Telegram's FAQ spells it out:

  • Your data goes. "All messages, groups, and contacts associated with your account will be deleted."
  • Your groups stay. Groups and channels you created "are orphaned and left without a creator but admins retain their rights."
  • Others keep what you sent. Your contacts "will still have their copy of the messages you sent them."
  • There's no way back. "Termination of a Telegram account is irreversible." If you sign up again, "you will appear as a new user," and people with your number in their contacts "will be notified."

To your contacts, your old chats show a blank profile called "Deleted Account," xvpn says.

What should you do before you delete?

  1. Delete messages for both sides. While the account still works, pick "Delete for me and the other person" in private chats, xvpn says. Telegram's FAQ describes the same option.
  2. Export your chats. Telegram Desktop can export chat history, xvpn notes. tech.co gives the path: Settings, Advanced, Export Telegram Data.
  3. Hand over your groups and channels. Transfer ownership to someone you trust, since they'll lose their creator.
  4. Cancel Premium in your app store. Premium bought through the App Store or Google Play keeps billing after you delete, xvpn says. One bought through @PremiumBot stops on its own. Our Telegram Premium guide covers the plans.
  5. Use or move Stars, gifts and usernames. xvpn says Fragment usernames, collectible gifts and Stars are tied to the account. See our guides to Telegram Stars and Telegram gifts.
  6. Check sites you sign in to with Telegram. Those logins stop working once the account's gone.

Does uninstalling Telegram delete your account?

No. "Uninstalling the Telegram app will not delete your account," xvpn's guide says. Your chats stay in Telegram's cloud until the self-destruct timer runs out.

Can you delete a Telegram account you can't log into?

It's hard. Telegram's FAQ says "whoever has the number, has the account." If you're still logged in somewhere else, you can delete it from there: "You can delete your Telegram account if you are logged in on at least one of your other devices," the FAQ says. Without the number or a logged-in device, you'll likely have to wait out the inactivity timer, xvpn notes.

Watch out for apps that offer to delete it for you

A Play Store app in Google's top 10 for "how to delete telegram account" on October 23, 2026 offered to delete accounts "by our special bot." Telegram's FAQ says login codes "should never be shared with anyone, including other services or apps." Deleting through telegram.org or the app "is always free," xvpn's guide says, so there's no reason to hand your code to anyone.
