Telegram pays channel owners in a few ways, and the best known is a share of ad money. On March 31, 2024, Telegram said "owners of public channels with at least 1000 subscribers can be rewarded with 50% of the revenue from ads displayed in their channels," and that's the share its terms still set. You can also sell paid posts for Telegram Stars, take Star donations, publish sponsored posts and earn affiliate commissions from mini apps. Paid posts earn "an equivalent of 0.013 USD worth of rewards from Telegram for each Star," its creator terms say.

Creators "may be eligible to receive rewards from ads displayed in their channel, proceeds from sponsored posts they publish and donations of Telegram Stars from their subscribers," Telegram's terms say.

How does Telegram's ad revenue sharing work?

Telegram shows ads only in large public channels, and you'll get half. Its blog says the ads "are shown only in large public channels," and they're "not based on user data" either. To see your numbers, you'll "Go to Channel Settings > Statistics > Monetization," as Telegram puts it. Withdrawals go through Fragment, and you can also put rewards back into Telegram ads. When it launched the program, Telegram said its users "generate over 1 trillion views in channels every month" in total.

There's a caveat worth knowing. Telegram's terms call rewards "an optional good-faith effort by Telegram to incentivize content creators" that "may be waived or discontinued at any time," so don't plan on them lasting forever.

How do paid posts and Star donations work?

With paid posts, you hide a post until readers pay Stars to unlock it. Owners "may choose to monetize individual posts, making their contents hidden unless readers offer a certain number of Telegram Stars to unlock them," Telegram's terms say. You'll then get about $0.013 in rewards per Star.

Donations come through a "dedicated Star reaction" on your posts, and the reward is "based on the number of Stars they have received as donations," Telegram says. Stars take longer to cash out than other rewards. The terms say "Star balance rewards require 21 days" before you can withdraw them. Our Telegram Stars guide covers what Stars cost to buy.

How do Telegram affiliate programs work?

Mini app developers can open affiliate programs, and anyone can join. Telegram says users can browse active programs "from their Star balance in Settings > My Stars," and there's no cap: "There are no limits on the number of programs a user can join," it says. Joining gives you a link, and you'll earn Stars when people you refer buy something in the mini app.

How do you get to 1,000 subscribers?

The ad share only starts at 1,000 subscribers on a public channel, so growth comes first. Post on a schedule, cross-promote from your other accounts, and give people a reason to share. Our guide to Telegram post views covers what counts as a view. Hclout sells Telegram members, so weigh that the way you'd weigh any seller, and our free Telegram members guide covers the free routes. Hclout's free tier gives 5 free Telegram subscribers, with no password, on the free page. A short Cloudflare check runs before each claim.

"How to make money on telegram" gets about 3,600 searches a month, up 15%.
