How to Make Facebook Private and Lock Your Profile
Set your future posts to Friends, limit past posts and hide your friends list. Where Facebook offers it, lock your profile. Every step, in Facebook's words.
There's no single switch that makes Facebook private. Set Who can see your future posts? to Friends, use Limit Past Posts on your old ones, and set Who can see your friends list? to Friends or Only me. All three sit under Audience and visibility in Settings. Where Facebook offers it, Lock Profile does most of this at once. But "this feature isn't available everywhere right now," Facebook's help center says.
We read Facebook's help center as Google showed it on October 23, 2026. We also read privacy guides from VPNRice (October 21, 2026) and Incogni, and The News Minute's report on the lock launch. Facebook's pages refuse our reader, so its steps are quoted from Google's view of them.
How do you make your Facebook posts private?
Facebook's help center lists these steps in the app:
- "Tap Menu in the top right of Facebook."
- "Tap Settings & privacy, then tap Settings."
- "Scroll down to Audience and visibility, then tap Posts."
- Next to Who can see your future posts?, pick Friends.
On a computer, click your profile picture at the top right, then Settings & privacy, then Settings, VPNRice's guide says. You'll find the same Audience and visibility section there.
You can still pick a different audience for one post while you write it. "Below your name, tap the audience selector (example: Friends)," Facebook's help center says. That choice only covers that post, VPNRice notes, and the next one goes back to your default.
How do you hide your old Facebook posts?
Use Limit Past Posts, in the same Posts area. It changes your past posts "visible to more people than just your friends (example: posts shared with Public) to be visible to only your Friends," Facebook's help center says.
Know three things before you tap it:
- There's no quick undo. "Limiting the audience of your previous posts cannot be reversed in one click," Facebook says. To reopen a post, you'd change its audience by hand.
- Custom audiences stay as they are. Posts you shared with a custom audience, such as Close Friends, aren't changed.
- Tags widen the audience. "If you tag someone in a post, the tagged person's friends may also see the post," Facebook's help center says.
Posts other people tag you in follow the audience their author chose, VPNRice adds.
How do you hide your friends list on Facebook?
Facebook makes the Friends section of your profile public unless you change it, VPNRice's guide says. Facebook's help center gives the steps:
- "Tap Menu in the top right of Facebook."
- "Scroll down and tap Settings & privacy, then tap Settings."
- "Scroll down to Audience and visibility and tap How people find and contact you."
- "Tap Who can see your friends list?"
- Pick Friends or Only me.
This only covers your own profile. If a friend leaves their list public, anyone can still see that you two are connected, VPNRice notes. To keep one person out entirely, our guide on how to block someone on Facebook has the steps.
How do you lock your Facebook profile?
Where it's offered, it takes a few taps:
- Open your profile.
- Tap the three dots near the top of your profile.
- Tap Lock Profile.
- Tap Lock Your Profile to confirm.
The first three steps follow wikiHow's guide as Google showed it. The last one comes from The News Minute's report on the launch. VPNRice says the app now also lists Profile Locking under Permissions in Settings.
Going by Facebook's help page, VPNRice says locking:
- limits the posts, photos and stories on your profile to friends
- limits your full-size profile and cover photos to friends
- changes posts you shared as Public to Friends
- turns on profile review and tag review
Facebook announced the lock in India on May 21, 2020. It called it "a feature designed for people in India, especially women, who want more control over their Facebook experience," The News Minute reported. Non-friends couldn't "zoom into, share or download" a locked profile's full-size profile picture and cover photo. A locked profile couldn't post publicly, either. Meta later wrote that it promoted the lock, "a one-click tool," to people in Afghanistan.
Why can't I lock my Facebook profile?
Most likely, Facebook doesn't offer it where you live. "You can only lock your profile in certain countries," its help center says. wikiHow's guide adds that "profile locking is not available in most countries, including the United States and Canada." It also says "Facebook doesn't list which countries allow profile locking."
| Search on Google | Searches a month |
|---|---|
| how to lock facebook profile | 74,000 |
| how to make facebook private | 22,200 |
| how to make facebook profile private | 14,800 |
| how to hide friends list on facebook | 14,800 |
| facebook profile lock | 4,400 |
Google Ads Keyword Planner, worldwide, read October 23, 2026. "How to make facebook profile private" is up 31%.
So the lock gets more searches than any other Facebook privacy question we checked, though most countries don't have it.
If you're somewhere that has it and still can't see it, check professional mode. A Reddit answer from 2024 and a troubleshooting guide from April 2026 both say Lock Profile shows up once professional mode is off. Without the lock, the settings above get you most of the way.
Searching for this also brings up Facebook group posts and forum threads that copy the lock steps and add phone numbers to call. Two of Google's top 10 results for "how to lock facebook profile" did on October 23, 2026. Facebook's own steps don't include a phone number, so don't call one, and never give anyone your password or a login code.
What stays public even on a private Facebook?
Some details stay public whatever you set. VPNRice lists "your name and gender, your profile and cover photos, your username and user ID, and your networks," and says no setting hides them. So pick a profile photo you don't mind strangers seeing.
Under How people find and contact you, you can also stop search engines outside Facebook from linking to your profile. A copy a search engine already saved can linger until it refreshes, VPNRice notes. Incogni's guide gives one more reason to check: anything set to Public on Facebook "can be used as AI training material."
Should you keep Facebook private if you want to grow?
A private profile suits your personal life. For an audience, a Page or professional mode handles the public side, and our guide on how to create a Facebook Page has the steps. The same choice comes up on other apps, in our guides to making Instagram private and making TikTok private. If you'd rather leave entirely, see how to delete your Facebook account.
Growth services need a public account or post to deliver to, as our page on buying followers for a private account explains. Hclout sells Facebook followers and Facebook likes, so weigh that the way you'd weigh any seller. Its free tier gives 20 free Facebook likes on a public post, with no password, on the free page. A short Cloudflare check runs before each claim.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make my Facebook completely private?
Set future posts to Friends, use Limit Past Posts, and set your friends list to Friends or Only me. Lock your profile too if Facebook offers it in your country.
Why is there no Lock Profile option on my Facebook?
Facebook only offers it in certain countries. Some users also say it's hidden while professional mode is on.
What do people see on a locked Facebook profile?
People who aren't your friends see a "Profile locked" notice and only a limited view of your profile, VPNRice says.
Can I undo Limit Past Posts?
Not in one click, Facebook's help center says. You'd have to change each post's audience by hand.
Can people see my friends list if it's hidden?
They can't see it on your profile. They can still see that you're connected on a friend's profile, if that friend's list is public.
Does a private Facebook hide my profile picture?
No. Your profile and cover photos stay public, though a lock keeps non-friends from opening the full-size versions.
