| Account type | Can it be private? |
|---|---|
| Personal | Yes, in Account privacy |
| Creator | No, switch to personal first |

| Teen, under 16 | Private by default |

To switch, open the menu, tap Account type and tools, then "Tap Switch to personal account, then tap Switch to personal to confirm," Instagram says.
What changes when you go private?
People who don't follow you can't see your posts, and every new follow becomes a request. Meta's own description for teens sums it up: on a private account, you "need to accept new followers and people who don't follow them can't see their content or interact with them," it wrote in 2024.
Going back has a catch, too. "All pending follow requests will be automatically accepted when you go public," Instagram's help center says. So check your requests before you switch back, or you'll let everyone in at once.
Are teen Instagram accounts private by default?
Yes. Since September 17, 2024, Meta has put teens into Teen Accounts with private accounts on by default. That "applies to all teens under 16 (including those already on Instagram and those signing up) and teens under 18 when they sign up for the app," Meta's announcement says. Teens under 16 need a parent's permission to loosen it.
| Teen Accounts | What Meta reported |
|---|---|
| Active accounts | At least 54 million by April 2025 |
| Teens 13 to 15 who kept the limits | 97% |
| Default for under 16s | Private, parent needed to change |
Meta newsroom, September 17, 2024 and April 8, 2025, read October 23, 2026.
Should you keep a growing account private?
That depends on what you want it for. A private account keeps strangers out, but it also keeps new followers from finding your posts. Growth services can't deliver to it either, as our page on buying followers for a private account explains. If you'd rather stay public and limit who sees certain posts, our guides to Close Friends and hiding your following list cover the in-between options. On TikTok, our guide to making your TikTok private has the steps. Hclout's free tier gives 12 free Instagram likes on a public post, with no password, on the free page. A short Cloudflare check runs before each claim.
