How to Remove Followers on Instagram, and Whether They Know
Open your Followers list, tap Remove next to the person and confirm. Instagram doesn't tell them. What they can still see, and how to clear spam followers.
To remove a follower on Instagram, go to your profile, tap Followers, find the person and tap Remove next to their name. Then tap Remove again to confirm. Instagram doesn't tell them. "When you remove a follower, they aren't notified that you've removed them," its Help Center says. If your account is public, though, they can still see your posts and follow you again.

How do you remove a follower on Instagram?
Instagram's Help Center gives these steps:
- "Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile."
- "Tap Followers at the top."
- "Tap Remove to the right of the follower you'd like to remove, then tap Remove to confirm."
Some versions of the app show an X instead of the word Remove. You can also start from the person's profile: tap the three dots at the top and pick Remove follower, as an Instagram reel from July 2023 shows.
On a computer, open your profile, click your follower count, then click Remove next to the account and confirm, GuidingTech's guide says.
What happens when you remove a follower?
It depends on whether your account is private.

On a private account, "the person will not be able to see your old or new posts and stories," GuidingTech says, and "will have to send a follow request again." On a public one, they won't get your posts in their feed, but they "can open your Instagram profile by searching for your username."
They can follow you again any time, and you'll get the usual notice when they do. They can still message you, too.
Will they know you removed them?
Instagram won't tell them. They might still work it out. On a private account, your profile shows them a Follow button and a note that the account's private, GuidingTech says. On a public one, their Following button turns back into Follow.

Can you remove spam followers all at once?
Only the ones Instagram flags. "You can review and remove potential spam and bot followers from your follower list on Instagram," its Help Center says. In the app, go to your profile and tap Followers. "If Instagram has flagged any followers," the Help Center says, you'll see them there to review. An Instagram reel from August 2024 shows them at the top of the list.
Instagram also stops many of these at the door. "Accounts that are likely to be spam can't follow you without your confirmation," the Help Center says.
