How to See Who Unfollowed You on Instagram, Without Risking Your Account
Instagram has no unfollow alert. How to check one person, how two data exports show every unfollow, and which tracker apps want your login.
Instagram doesn't tell you when someone unfollows you, and the app has no list of who left. You can check one person by hand. To see everyone, export your followers list from Instagram twice, some days apart, and compare the two. Some tracker apps stay logged in to your account instead. Instagram's Help Center says to "Be careful before giving third party apps or websites access to your Instagram account."

Does Instagram tell you who unfollowed you?
No. There's no alert, and DolphinRadar, one of the trackers, says Instagram "has never sent unfollow notifications" at all. Insights on a business or creator account show a count. The Help Center lists "Growth (number of followers you've gained or lost)" among them, with no names.
How do you check if one person unfollowed you?
- Open their profile. Tap the number of accounts they follow.
- Search for your username. If you're not on the list, they don't follow you.
- Or search your own Followers list. Type their name and see if they're there.
That works one account at a time. For a whole list, you'll need your data export.
How do you see everyone who unfollowed you?
Compare two copies of your follower list. Instagram lets you export your data, and the followers and following lists are part of it. One export only shows who doesn't follow you back. As Unfollow Checker puts it, "two exports from different dates show missing and new followers" side by side.
- Open Accounts Center. Go to Your information and permissions, then Export your information.
- Create an export to your device. Pick your profile.
- Choose only Followers and following. It's under Customize information.
- Set the date range to All time. Pick HTML or JSON as the format.
- Wait for the email. Instagram sends one when the file is ready to download.
- Repeat later and compare. Anyone in the first followers list who's missing from the second no longer follows you.

You can compare the two lists by hand or with a tool that reads the file. Unfollow Checker says its file "is never uploaded" and gets read in your browser.

Each kind has a catch.
- Login apps work from inside your account. FollowMeter says it "keeps your account connected in the background" for you. Instagram's Help Center says to "Revoke access on Instagram to any suspicious third-party apps" if your account's been hacked.
- Public scanners read follower lists by machine. Instagram's Terms of Use bar "accessing or collecting information in an automated way without our express permission," and these pages don't say they have it. They also work on any public username, so anyone can run one on you.
- Export readers only see the file you give them. They need two exports to show unfollows, so you'll have to plan ahead.
Why am I losing followers on Instagram?
People unfollow for their own reasons, and Instagram removes fake follows. It said in 2018 that it was "removing inauthentic likes, follows and comments" from accounts that used outside apps to grow. So if you used an app to gain followers, a later drop can be Instagram taking them back.
