Can you lose your account for buying followers? You can. It breaks Instagram's rules, though Instagram doesn't say how often it bans anyone for it. Its Community Guidelines ask users not to be "artificially collecting likes, followers, or shares." What Instagram has said it does is remove fake follows, then limit accounts that keep using growth apps. Meta has also taken sellers to court. In the US, buying fake followers for business can also break an FTC rule. The fines go up to $53,088 per violation.

What do Instagram's rules say?

The Community Guidelines, as Google shows them, say: "Help us stay spam-free by not artificially collecting likes, followers, or shares." Bought followers fall under "artificially collecting." That's the rule a purchase breaks.

In 2018, Instagram said it would start "removing inauthentic likes, follows and comments" from accounts using third-party growth apps. Accounts that keep using them "may see their Instagram experience impacted," it added. Its help pages describe the usual sign: an error that says "Try again later."

In October 2020, Meta sued four people who sold fake likes and followers. Its post says they provided "services intended to artificially inflate likes and followers of Instagram accounts." So far, the court cases we know of target sellers.

How likely is a ban?

Nobody outside Instagram can tell you. None of the official pages we read gives a rate. Neither does any page in Google's top 10 for the question. Buyers' stories run both ways. A Reddit reply from January 2025 says, "You may not get your account suspended (or you even shortly still might!)." Virallized, a rival growth service, writes that "an outright ban for a follower purchase alone is rare."

Two things raise the stakes. The first is your password. A service that asks for it logs in as you. Kicksta's terms, for one, say you "consent to a login from one of Our hubs." The second is that sellers leave the risk with you. The same terms say the company "is not responsible for any restrictions" Instagram puts on your account.

Is buying followers illegal?

In the US, an FTC rule from August 14, 2024 covers it. The rule "prohibits anyone from selling or buying fake indicators of social media influence," such as bot followers. It has limits, though. It applies when the buyer "knew or should have known" the followers were fake. They also have to "misrepresent the buyer's influence or importance for a commercial purpose."

So it's aimed at businesses and creators who use a bought count to win customers or deals. On December 22, 2025, the FTC sent warning letters to 10 companies about the rule. It said violations can bring "civil penalties of up to $53,088 per violation." The letters themselves "are not formal determinations," it noted.

What should you do if you already bought followers?

• Don't buy more on top. Instagram's 2018 note talks about accounts that "continue" to use these services.
• If a service has your password, change it and turn on two-factor login.
• Expect some followers to drop when Instagram removes fake accounts.
• If you use the count to sell anything, read the FTC rule before you lean on it.
