Instagram Close Friends: How It Works and Who Can See It

Close Friends lets you share stories, notes and reels with a short list. Who sees the list (nobody), whether anyone's notified, the green ring, and the traps.

Close Friends is a private list on Instagram. When you share a story to it, only the people on the list see it, and they get a green ring around your photo instead of the usual pink one. Nobody else can see the list. Inrō's July 2026 guide puts it plainly: "Nobody can see the list, including the people on it. No notification is sent when you add or remove someone." The list works for more than stories, too. Instagram's Help Center says people on it see a Close friends label "when viewing your notes, reels or stories."

We read Inrō's guide through our server, and Instagram's Help Center as Google showed it, on October 23, 2026.

How do you add people to Close Friends?

  1. Go to your profile and tap the menu in the top right.
  2. Below Who can see your content, tap Close Friends.
  3. Search for people and add or remove them.

Inrō says the changes "take effect immediately with no notification sent." "How to add close friends on instagram" gets about 1,000 searches a month.

How do you share a story with Close Friends?

Create your story as usual, then pick Close Friends instead of Your Story before you share it. Instagram's Help Center says that if someone has added you to their list, "you'll see a Close Friends label when viewing their stories and a green ring around their profile photo."

Does Instagram notify people when you remove them?

No. Inrō says "Instagram never notifies anyone when you add or remove them." The only sign someone is on your list is the green ring. If you take them off, the ring just stops showing up for them. Inrō also says Instagram "does not notify anyone for Story screenshots, Close Friends included."

Can you see someone else's Close Friends list?

No. You can tell you're on someone's list when you see their green ring, and that's all. Inrō says people "cannot see who else is included, cannot see the size of the list." It warns that any tool claiming to show you a list "is either guessing or scraping in ways that violate Instagram's terms."

What are the Close Friends traps?

Two catch people out, according to Inrō:

  1. You can't make a Close Friends story public later. You "cannot convert an existing Close Friends Story to public after posting," so post it again to Your Story.
  2. Highlights keep the setting. A Close Friends story saved to a highlight "keeps its Close Friends visibility," so it stays private.

People often mix up Close Friends and Favorites. Close Friends decides who sees your content, and Favorites decides whose posts you see first in your own feed.

Why isn't Close Friends working?

Inrō lists the usual reasons, most likely first. The story may have expired after its 24 hours. You may not be on the list. The app may need an update. Or it's a glitch that logging out and back in fixes.
