How to Turn Off Comments on Facebook Posts
On a public post, pick Profiles and Pages you mention, and nobody else can comment. Groups get a real off switch. Plus Pages, hidden comments, blocked words.
To turn off comments on a Facebook post from your profile, make sure the post is Public, tap the three dots on it, tap Who can comment on your post?, and pick Profiles and Pages you mention. If you don't mention anyone, nobody else can comment. Statusbrew's guide says this option "will stop anyone from commenting on your Facebook post unless you mention them." In a group, admins, moderators and the post's author can switch commenting off outright.
We read Meta's March 2021 announcement and Statusbrew's guide (updated July 25, 2025) through our server, and Facebook's help center as Google showed it, on October 23, 2026.

How do you turn off comments on a Facebook post?
In the app, Statusbrew gives these steps:
- Open the post and tap the three dots in its top right corner.
- Tap Who can comment on your post?
- Tap Profiles and Pages you mention.
- Tap Done.
On a computer, check the audience first. Click the three dots, then Edit audience, and pick Public. Refresh the page, open the three dots again, and choose the same option.
Why Public? "Facebook only lets you limit who can comment on posts from your personal profile if it's set to 'Public,'" a Reddit answer from November 2022 explains. Facebook's own help page is titled "Choose who can comment on your public Facebook posts." On a Friends post, only your friends can comment anyway.
Meta added the control in March 2021. Its announcement says you choose "from a menu of options ranging from anyone who can see the post to only the people and Pages you tag."
How do you limit comments on all your public posts?
Facebook's help center says "you can change who can comment on all your public posts or on an individual post on your profile." For all of them at once:
- Tap Menu, then Settings & privacy, then Settings.
- Below Audience and visibility, tap Followers and Public Content.
- Tap Who can comment on your public posts? and pick an audience.
Statusbrew's example sets it to friends of friends. Any single post can still go narrower with the steps above.
How do you turn off comments in a Facebook group?
Groups have a real off switch. "Admins, moderators and the post creator can turn off commenting on a post," Facebook's help center says. Open the group, go to the post, tap the three dots, and tap Turn off commenting. The help center adds that turning off replies to one comment "is only available in some groups for now."
Can you turn off comments on a Facebook Page?
You can limit who comments, the same way. Meta's announcement says "if you're a public figure, creator or brand, you too can choose to limit your commenting audience on your public posts."
Pages also get moderation tools. In Meta's Business Help Center, you can "Hide comments containing certain words from your Page" and switch on "Hide posts and comments with profanity." When a comment uses a blocked word, "we'll hide the comment so that it doesn't appear on your Page," Facebook's help center says. If you're still setting a Page up, see how to create a Facebook Page.
What's the difference between hiding a comment and turning comments off?
Turning comments off stops new ones. Hiding works on one comment, and its replies, at a time. "Hiding a comment removes it from public view, but the original poster and their friends can still see it," Statusbrew explains. Agorapulse's October 2025 guide agrees that a hidden comment "remains visible to the person who posted it and their friends." Statusbrew adds that "Facebook does not notify individual users when you disable comments on a post or hide a comment."
To stop one person for good, blocking works. Statusbrew says a blocked person can't "comment on any of your posts, send you messages, or interact with you on Facebook." Our guide on how to block someone on Facebook has the steps.
Should you turn comments off?
Meta pitched the control as a way to "limit potentially unwanted interactions." That's worth doing when trolls or spam pile up. On a post you want people to talk about, a narrower audience or a few blocked words keeps the useful comments coming.
