How to Know If Someone Blocked You on WhatsApp

WhatsApp never tells you. Its seven signs, from one gray check mark to calls that fail, what else causes each one, and what a block really changes.

WhatsApp never tells you that you've been blocked. You have to read the signs: no last seen or online, a profile photo that stops changing, messages stuck on one gray check mark, and calls that don't go through. Even then, you can't be sure. Tech Advisor quotes WhatsApp's help page on it: "We have made this intentionally ambiguous in order to protect your privacy." Each sign has an ordinary cause too, so check your own settings first.

We read Kanal's guide (October 7, 2026), which follows WhatsApp's help pages, and IONOS' (updated October 29, 2025) through our server, and WhatsApp's help center as Google showed it, on October 23, 2026.

"How to know if someone blocked you on whatsapp" gets about 74,000 searches a month.

What are the signs that someone blocked you on WhatsApp?

WhatsApp's help page "Being blocked by someone" starts the list: "If a person has blocked you, you will not be able to see their message read confirmation (double blue check mark)," and "You can't see the contacts' statuses." Kanal lists all seven:

  1. No more blue check marks on your messages.
  2. No more status updates from them.
  3. A profile photo that no longer changes.
  4. One gray check mark, never two.
  5. Calls that don't go through.
  6. You can't add them to a group you admin.
  7. No last seen or online in the chat.

Kanal says WhatsApp adds that "even all seven together are not proof."

What else could explain each sign?

What you noticeOther causes
No blue check marksEither of you turned off read receipts
One gray check markTheir phone is off or offline
No last seen or onlineYou hide yours, or they hide theirs
No profile photo or statusPrivacy settings, or an unsaved number
Can't add them to a groupThey limit who can add them

Kanal (October 7, 2026), citing WhatsApp's help pages, and IONOS (updated October 29, 2025), read October 23, 2026.

Two of these start on your side. "If you turned off read receipts, you no longer see anyone's read receipts. If you do not share your last seen, you cannot see other people's," Kanal says. So open Settings, then Privacy, on your own phone before you decide anything.

IONOS makes the same point about every clue: "For each of the signs mentioned above, there is at least one alternative explanation." A lost phone or a new number can look just like a block.

How sure can you be?

Not fully. One sign alone means little. Several signs at once, lasting for days, from someone who used to show all this, make a block more likely, Kanal says. They still don't make it certain.

A Reddit user shared a quick check in 2024: "just tap on their profile image from the message. If it disappears, they blocked you." Treat it as a hint. A removed photo looks the same.

What does a block actually change?

Kanal draws these changes from WhatsApp's help pages:

  • They stop getting what you send. Messages, calls and status updates don't reach them.
  • Their activity is hidden from you. That's where the seven signs come from.
  • You stay in each other's contacts. A block doesn't remove anyone from a contact list.
  • Shared groups keep working. You still see each other's messages there.
  • Nothing arrives later. If they unblock you, what you sent during the block isn't delivered.

The person who blocked you sees a "You blocked this person" label, and you don't, Kanal adds.

What should you do if you think you're blocked?

Check your settings and the number first, then give it time. A phone that's switched off shows the same single check mark. Don't try to get around it. Kanal says WhatsApp tells people who block someone that "if that person writes from new numbers, each new number can be blocked and reported." If it matters, a call, an email or a friend will tell you more than a check mark.
