How to Make a YouTube Channel: YouTube's Own Steps
YouTube's own steps to make a channel, personal or under a brand name, then set up the basics. Plus what YouTube says about how often to upload.
You make a YouTube channel from your Google account in a few clicks. Sign in, open Settings, choose to create a channel, then pick a profile picture, a name and a handle. YouTube's Help Center says you can watch and subscribe with just a Google account, but "To upload videos, comment, or make playlists, you need a YouTube channel." If you want a business name, or more than one person running the channel, you'll make it as a Brand Account instead.
We read YouTube's Help Center and its YouTube for Creators pages through our server on October 23, 2026.
How do you make a personal YouTube channel?
YouTube's Help Center lists these steps:
- Sign in to YouTube on a computer or the mobile site.
- Click your profile picture, then Settings.
- Go to the Account section and select Add or manage channel(s).
- Click Create a channel.
- Choose a profile picture, type in your name and handle.
- Click Create channel.
A personal channel is one "that only you can manage," YouTube says. "How to make a youtube channel" gets about 40,500 searches a month, and "how to create a youtube channel" another 27,100.
How do you make a channel with a business name?
Use a Brand Account. YouTube says a Brand Account lets you "use a different name on YouTube than your Google Account," and it's the way to give a channel "more than one manager or owner."
- Sign in and go to your channel list.
- Click Create a new channel.
- Choose a profile picture, a name and a handle.
- Click Create channel. YouTube says this "creates a new Brand Account."
| Channel type | Who can manage it | Name |
|---|---|---|
| Personal | Only you | Your Google Account name |
| Brand Account | Several owners and managers | Any name you choose |

One catch: YouTube notes that if you use YouTube "with a supervised experience, you may not be able to create a channel."
How do you set up your channel?
YouTube for Creators gives these first steps after you've made it:
- Customize your channel in YouTube Studio. Studio is where you'll post, edit details and read your stats.
- Add a banner. YouTube says it "can include graphics, short text, or even your upload schedule."
- Add your profile picture, if you haven't already.
- Write a description that tells viewers "what your channel is about and what they can expect."
- Add links to your website or socials, and a contact email.
YouTube calls Studio "home base for creators," and it's where you can "track your progress toward eligibility in the YouTube Partner Program." Our guide to YouTube monetization requirements covers what that takes.
How often should you upload to a new channel?
Less often than you might think you need to. YouTube's performance FAQ says it has "found that growth in views across uploads is not correlated with time between uploads." It also studied channels that took a break and "found no correlation between break length and changes in views." So pick a pace you can keep. A Reddit creator's advice from January 2026 is to "Pick something you can make lots of content for and not get bored or burnt out."
Timing matters less than you'd expect, too. YouTube says "Publish time is not known to impact a video's long-term performance." Our guide to the best time to post on YouTube compares the studies anyway, and our YouTube algorithm guide covers what YouTube rewards.
Can you buy views to get a new channel started?
Not from us. Hclout doesn't sell YouTube views or subscribers. Our page on buying YouTube views explains why: "YouTube filters bought views out of the count, often within days." For a look at what the top of YouTube looks like, see the most viewed YouTube videos.
