Reddit Karma: What It Is and How to Get It
Reddit karma moves with the votes on your posts and comments. What it unlocks, why subreddits set minimums, and how to earn it without breaking Reddit's rules.
Reddit karma is the score that moves with the votes on your posts and comments. "Upvoting and downvoting on Reddit not only influences what content people see, it also impacts how much karma people have," Reddit's help center says. You earn it by "participating in communities that you have an interest in and making posts and comments people enjoy and upvote." Many subreddits won't let you post until you've got some.
We read Reddit's rules on October 24, 2026. Reddit's help center blocks our reader, so its pages come from Google's view of them. All of them were updated in 2026.
About 14,800 people search "how to get karma on reddit" each month, and 9,900 more ask "what is reddit karma."
What is Reddit karma?
It's a running score of how people have voted on what you've shared. Your profile splits it into post karma and comment karma, and "the total is shown there" when you open your profile, as one karma tool puts it.
Karma doesn't track upvotes one for one. "Karma is not gained 1:1 with votes," a Reddit user wrote in July 2026, and others report getting "less karma than upvotes." Reddit's help page doesn't give a formula, so treat the number as a rough signal.
Why do subreddits require karma?
Mostly to keep spam out. Reddit's Poster Eligibility Guide "informs users that they can't post until minimum criteria within the community are met." It can show your "post karma relative to the post karma needed to post in a specific community," Reddit's help center says.
Moderators set those gates. Reddit's AutoModerator documentation lets them check an author's karma and "account_age," so a brand-new account with no karma often gets filtered.
There's a second, hidden score too. "CQS is a user classification that was established to identify potential spammers or users less likely to contribute," Reddit says of its Contributor Quality Score. Soar, a marketing agency, describes it as "a five-tier per-account score (lowest, low, moderate, high, highest) that AutoMod can use."
Where else does karma matter?
In Reddit's Contributor Program, karma decides whether awards pay. "Earn when redditors use gold for awards on your posts or comments," Reddit's earn page says, and "You earn more depending on the account karma and awards on your posts and comments."
| Karma | Contributor Program tier |
|---|---|
| 0 to 99 | Non-contributor: "No payout; balance rolls over" |
| 100 to 4,999 | Contributor |
| 5,000 or more | Top contributor |

How do you get karma on Reddit?
Slowly, and by being useful. These steps follow Reddit's own advice and what longtime users suggest.
- Pick communities you care about. That's Reddit's own advice, and it's where your comments will be worth reading.
- Read each community's rules first. Reddit's Rule 2 starts with "Abide by community rules," and many subreddits list karma or account-age minimums in theirs.
- Start with comments. A good answer on a busy thread can earn karma before you're allowed to post.
- Be early on new posts. "Try to be the first on commenting a post, and don't talk about controversial topics/get into arguments," one Reddit user advised in December 2024.
- Answer questions you know. Help threads and Q&A subreddits reward clear, specific answers.
- Post when you can. Once you clear a community's minimum, share things that fit it.
Communities for new users can help you learn the site. Know their limits, though. r/NewToReddit's rule is "Absolutely no asking for or offering karma or votes!"
What should you avoid?
Karma farming, vote trading and anything automated. Reddit's Rule 2 asks you to "Participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest, and do not spam or engage in disruptive behaviors (including content manipulation)." Rule 5 is simply "Be authentic."
Reddit's enforcement list includes "Temporary or permanent suspension of accounts" and "Removal of privileges from, or adding restrictions to, accounts." A suspension takes the whole account with it.
Can you lose karma? Yes. Downvotes pull it down the same way upvotes push it up, so arguing in a thread can cost you.
Can you buy Reddit karma?
Hclout doesn't sell karma or upvotes. Karma only comes from votes, and buying votes falls under the "content manipulation" Reddit's Rule 2 bans.
Hclout does sell Reddit views, subscribers and shares on its Reddit page, so weigh our advice the way you'd weigh any seller's. Subscribers add members to a community. They don't add a single point of karma, and Reddit's rules apply to them too.
