How to Create a Facebook Group

Menu, Groups, Create, then a name and a privacy setting. Public, private and hidden in Facebook's words, making a Page the admin, and switching later.

To create a Facebook group, tap Menu, then Groups, then Create. Enter a name, pick a privacy setting and invite people. On a computer, click Groups in the left menu, then Create new group. It's the privacy setting that matters most. In a private group, "Only members can see who's in the group and what they post," Facebook's help center says.

We read Meta's November 3, 2025 announcement on group privacy through our server, and Facebook's help center as Google showed it, on October 23, 2026. Facebook's help pages block our reader.

"How to create a facebook group" gets about 12,100 searches a month.

How do you create a Facebook group?

In the app, Facebook's help center gives these steps:

  1. "Tap Menu in the top right of Facebook, then tap Groups."
  2. "Tap Create in the top right."
  3. "Enter your group name."
  4. "Select the privacy option."

On a computer: "From your Feed, click Groups in the left menu. If you don't see Groups, click See more." Then "Click Create new group" and enter the name.

Should your group be public or private?

Facebook's help center pages on group privacy and hidden groups, as Google showed them on October 23, 2026.

Facebook's help center says posts in a public group can be seen by "Anyone on or off Facebook," while in a private group it's "Current members." A private group can also be hidden. Then "Only members (current, invited and former) can find the group in search and other places on Facebook." It adds that "Public groups are always visible."

Pick public if you'd like strangers to find you and join in. Pick private if members will share things they'd rather keep among themselves.

Can you change a group's privacy later?

Yes, both ways, with some rules. Since November 2025, Meta lets admins turn a private group public. Its announcement lists the safeguards:

  • "There is a three-day window to review and cancel the group conversion."
  • "Past content stays private." Posts from the private days stay visible only to earlier members and the admins.
  • "Member lists are protected." After the switch, "only admins and moderators can see the member list."
  • "When a group changes from private to public, all members are notified about the change."

It's possible to go back, too. "If a public group changes back to private, only people approved by an admin can join," Meta says.

Can you create a group as your Facebook Page?

Yes. Facebook's help center says you can "create a group with your Page as the admin." Meta's business lessons start with "Log into Facebook and switch to your Page account," then "Tap the More icon" and "Tap Groups." Our guide on how to create a Facebook Page covers the Page itself.

What should you do after you create it?

Schulze Creative's guide suggests you "Customize your group with a cover photo and description that reflects its purpose." For a private group, it adds to "Set up your group settings, like membership approvals, post permissions, and group rules." Then invite your first members and post something they'll want to answer.

When a group needs a break, admins can pause it, as our guide on how to delete a Facebook group explains. Members who want out can follow how to leave a Facebook group. To keep busy threads under control, see turning off comments on Facebook. Hclout sells Facebook group members, so weigh that the way you'd weigh any seller.
