How to Delete a Facebook Group, or Pause It
Remove every member, then leave last and tap Delete. Facebook has no one-click delete. Here's the order, why big groups take hours, and pausing instead.
To delete a Facebook group, you remove every member first, then leave the group as the last person and confirm Delete. There's no one-click button. Facebook's help center starts the same way: "Tap Manage and select People," then "Tap each member" to take them out. Only an admin can do it. If you'd rather keep the group, pausing stops new posts without removing anyone.
We read Mighty Networks' guide (updated March 31, 2026) and Groupboss' (January 20, 2026) through our server, and Facebook's help center as Google showed it, on October 23, 2026. Facebook's site blocks our reader.
"How to delete a facebook group" gets about 18,100 searches a month.
How do you delete a Facebook group?
Facebook's help center starts with these steps:
- "Tap Menu in the top right of Facebook, then tap Groups and select your group."
- "Tap Manage and select People."
- Tap each member and remove them.
Mighty Networks finishes the job: "Once you're the last person in your Facebook Group, you can leave it yourself." At that point "Facebook will give you a 'Delete' button." Confirm it, and the group is gone.
On a computer, Mighty Networks says to open the Members tab, find "the 3 dots next to the member's name," and "Click 'Remove Member'" for each one. Facebook offers to block them from coming back too. Since you're deleting the group, you can skip that.
Why does deleting a big group take so long?
Because it's one member at a time. A Reddit admin did the math in August 2024: "Taking a minimum of 10 seconds to delete just one member, to delete over 6000 would take over 16 hours!" Mighty Networks notes that "there are some browser extensions that will delete all the members at once." They work through your account, so weigh that before you install one. For a big group, pausing it first can make sense.
Can you pause a Facebook group instead?
Yes. Facebook's help center says "If you're an admin of a group, you can pause your group if you need a break from maintaining it." Groupboss lists the steps: open the group's three dots, pick Pause group, choose a reason, and write an announcement. You can also set a resume date.
| Delete | Pause | |
|---|---|---|
| First step | Remove every member | Pick a reason |
| New posts | The group is gone | Nobody can post |
| Members | Removed | They stay and get a notice |
| Who can do it | An admin | An admin |

A paused group is quiet for everyone. PilotPoster's October 2026 guide says "Nobody can post, including admins" until the resume date. Groupboss adds that members "will also get a notification," and can still delete their own posts and comments or leave. To restart it, tap Resume.
What if you're not the admin?
You can't delete the group. Pausing or deleting "must be taken by the Facebook Group's administrator," Linktree's guide says. If you just want out, see how to leave a Facebook group. For a group that's lost its admin, a Reddit thread from April 2026 points to Facebook's "No Admin" contact form.

To quiet a group without closing it, admins can also turn off comments on single posts. Hclout sells Facebook group members, so weigh that the way you'd weigh any seller.
