YouTube Premium Lite: Price and What It Covers

YouTube Premium Lite is YouTube's cheaper paid plan. It costs $8.99 a month in the US and takes the ads off most videos. Music and Shorts aren't covered. Since February 24, 2026, Lite has also included downloads and background play on most videos. YouTube's own page calls it "44% cheaper than the Premium Monthly Individual plan."

We read YouTube's Lite and Premium pages from a US connection, and Google's help pages, on October 24, 2026.

About 135,000 people search "youtube premium lite" each month. In May 2026, right after the US price increase, searches more than doubled, from 90,500 in April to 201,000.

What does YouTube Premium Lite include?

YouTube's US page sums it up in one line: "Premium Lite benefits (background play, downloads, ad-free) available on most non-music content, excluding Shorts. Ads may appear when you search or browse."

• Most videos without ads. Google's help page says you can "watch most YouTube and YouTube Kids videos ad-free, offline, and in the background."
• Downloads and background play. They arrived on February 24, 2026. "Starting today, and in the coming weeks rolling out everywhere Premium Lite is available, subscribers will be able to watch most videos ad-free, offline and in the background," YouTube's blog said.
• No music. "YouTube Premium Lite doesn't include YouTube Music Premium," Google says. You "won't be able to play songs ad-free, offline, and in the background on the YouTube Music app."
• No Shorts. Ads can still show on Shorts, and when you search or browse.

Lite is a plan for one person. Google's "Join YouTube Premium" page lists it with the individual monthly plans, and YouTube's US page shows a single Lite price. Our YouTube Premium price guide has every full Premium plan.

How much is Premium Lite?

Lite costs $8.99 a month in the US. It launched there on March 5, 2025, at $7.99, and rose $1 in April 2026, when every Premium plan went up. New members get a "1-month trial for $0," for "eligible new members only."

Prices vary by country. In Germany, YouTube's Lite page showed €7.99 a month on October 24, 2026.

You may already have Lite. Eligible paid Google AI Pro members get the Premium Lite individual plan, and it "is automatically activated if you're eligible," Google says. Three limits apply:

• Paid plans only. On a trial, Lite is added "after the trial finishes and converts to a paid subscription."
• Only the manager gets it. On a family group, "Only the plan manager can watch videos without ads."
• It won't stack. If you already pay for Premium or Lite, the bundled Lite "won't activate," and your own subscription isn't canceled for you.

Where is Premium Lite available?

Google listed 87 countries and regions on October 24, 2026: Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Belarus, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Kuwait, Laos, Latvia, Lebanon, Libya, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Norway, Oman, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Tanzania, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, United States, Uruguay, Venezuela, Vietnam, Yemen and Zimbabwe.

Travel has rules. If you visit a country without Premium Lite, "you won't be able to access your membership benefits," and downloads stay playable "for 30 days." Stay away longer than 30 days or move, and YouTube "may take action on your subscription, such as cancelling it."

Signing up through a VPN for another country's price is risky too. "If you misrepresent your location (e.g., use VPN)," Google says, "your subscription may be subject to cancellation."

At the 2025 launch, YouTube said Lite fit viewers who want most videos ad-free, "whether it's gaming, comedy, cooking or learning." For "offline and background play," it pointed people to Premium. Subscribers asked for both, and YouTube added them a year later. "You asked, and we listened!" its post began.

Is YouTube Premium Lite worth it?

It is if you watch long videos and skip music. Lite saves $7 a month against full Premium, or $84 a year, and now covers downloads and background play too.

Pick full Premium if music or Shorts make up much of your viewing. Students should compare first. YouTube's Student plan is full Premium for the same $8.99 a month. Since August 19, 2026, eligible US college students can also bundle Premium with Google AI Pro for $8.99, YouTube says. Families get the most for the money from the Family plan, $26.99 for up to six people.

And if you pay for Google AI Pro, check before you subscribe. You may already have Lite.

How do you get or cancel Premium Lite?

You sign up on youtube.com/premiumlite. To cancel, go to the Purchases and memberships page. "You can rejoin Premium or Premium Lite at any time," YouTube's page says.
