What is a duet on TikTok?

A duet puts your video side by side with someone else's original, both playing at once. It's TikTok's built-in reaction and collaboration format, and one of the cheapest legitimate ways to put your face in front of someone else's audience.

How duets work

Pick a video, tap share, choose duet, and record your half. The result shows the original on one side and you on the other, credited and linked to the source.

Creators can turn duets off per video or account-wide, and the credit chain stays visible. Reactions, harmonies, judge-the-outfit games and split-screen challenges all grew from this one button.

Why duets grow small accounts

A duet inherits some of the original's momentum: viewers of a trending video get offered reactions to it, and the For You page tests your take in front of an audience already interested in the topic.

For a small account, that's borrowed distribution with no budget: the trend supplies the audience, your angle supplies the reason to follow. It converts best when your half genuinely adds something: expertise, a joke, a correction.

Duet strategy that works

  • Duet inside your niche, while the original is still rising.
  • Add a real layer. A nodding head next to a viral clip converts nobody.
  • Post fast: trends have a window, and late duets compete with thousands.
  • Check what duetted well and make it a series; repeatable formats compound.

Common questions

Why can't I duet some videos?

The creator turned duets off for that video or their whole account. Nothing is wrong with your account.

Do duets perform as well as normal videos?

They're tested by the same system. A good duet can outperform your normal videos because it enters with the trend's audience attached.

What's the difference between a duet and a stitch?

A duet plays side by side at the same time. A stitch plays a clip of the original first, then cuts to you. Duet is simultaneous, stitch is sequential.
