Can Instagram Detect Bought Followers? And Can Brands Tell?

Can Instagram detect bought followers? Meta says it can find fake engagement and that it looks for it all the time. In 2019 it wrote that it uses "machine learning technology to proactively find and remove inauthentic activity from Instagram." It has also sued people who sold fake followers, in 2019 and again in 2020. Instagram isn't the only one looking, either. Brands run free "fake follower check" tools before they pay a creator, and those tools read public signs anyone can see.

Does Instagram know if you buy followers?

It says it looks. Meta's April 2019 post lists two things. It's "blocking the creation and use of fake accounts." It's also "using machine learning technology to proactively find and remove inauthentic activity." In 2018, Instagram said it would start "removing inauthentic likes, follows and comments" from accounts using third-party growth apps. When it spots inauthentic activity, its help pages say you may see an error that reads "Try again later."

It also goes after sellers. The same 2019 post announced a lawsuit against "one company and three people based in New Zealand." They'd "provided fake likes, views and followers to Instagram users," it said. In October 2020, Meta sued four more people. One site they ran "used a network of bots to automate the delivery of likes and followers."

Can other people tell you bought followers?

Often, yes. Fake follower checkers are free or cheap, and brands use them. They read two kinds of signs:

Modash spells out the profile signs: "Fake accounts tend to have no profile image, a gibberish username, a missing bio, and few or no posts." nurdd's estimator works the other way. It "reads public engagement patterns." It "never sees the follower list," so it can't name the fake accounts.

How can you tell if someone bought followers?

The same signs the checkers use work by hand:

• Open some of their followers. Look for the empty profiles Modash describes.
• Compare likes and comments with the follower count. InfluenceFlow's 2026 guide puts a healthy account at "1-5%" engagement.
• Look for sudden jumps. A count that leaps overnight, with no viral post behind it, stands out.
• Read the comments. Generic, repeated comments are a common tell.

None of this proves a purchase. Bots also follow real accounts on their own, and some creators get targeted by them.

What does that mean if you're thinking of buying?

Expect Instagram to remove some bought followers, and expect any brand you pitch to check. A low engagement rate next to a big count is what those tools look for.
