Does Instagram Notify When You Screenshot? The October 2026 Answer
No for stories, posts, Reels and profiles. Vanish mode alerts, disappearing photos block screenshots, and Instagram is testing story alerts.
No, not for stories, posts, Reels or profiles. Instagram sends a screenshot alert in one place, vanish mode chats, where it tells the other person "if we detect they take a screenshot" of a message. Disappearing photos and videos go further. Since Meta's change of October 2024, you can't screenshot them at all. One thing is moving, though. On October 22, 2026, Mashable reported that Instagram is testing alerts for story screenshots and screen recordings.
We read Instagram's Help Center and the news reports as Google shows them on October 23, 2026. We didn't test this on any account.
What happens when you screenshot on Instagram?
| What you capture | What happens |
|---|---|
| A story | No alert, in testing |
| A post or Reel | No alert |
| A profile | No alert |
| A regular chat | No alert |
| A vanish mode chat | Alert to the other person |
| A view-once photo | Blocked |

Meta's 2024 block covers screen recordings too, so recording a disappearing photo doesn't work either.
Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a story?
Not today, though Instagram has tried it before. TechCrunch reported on February 11, 2018 that Instagram was "testing a feature that will show users when someone else takes a screenshot of their story" at the time. By June 15, 2018, Mashable wrote that Instagram "has stopped testing" it.
Now a new test is reported. Mashable wrote on October 22, 2026 that Instagram "is reportedly testing a new feature" that tells people when someone screenshots or screen records their story. Snapchat already does this. As far as Google's results show, Instagram itself hasn't announced it.
Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a DM?
In vanish mode, yes. The Help Center says "You'll receive a notification if we detect they take a screenshot" in that mode. Beebom describes it as a line in the chat: "You took a screenshot" for you, and "(username) took a screenshot" for the other person.
In a regular chat, the Help Center describes no alert. A Reddit thread from September 2026 says some people saw alerts after an update, and we couldn't confirm that in Instagram's own pages.
Can you screenshot a disappearing photo on Instagram?
No. Meta said on October 17, 2024 that it would "no longer allow people to use their device" to screenshot or screen record "ephemeral images or videos sent in private messages" on Instagram. SWGFL, a UK online safety site, added that view once and allow replay photos stopped opening "on web versions of Instagram, to stop users from circumventing screenshot prevention" there.
Older guides still say Instagram notifies the sender instead. Dash Social's page of April 2025 says it "DOES notify users if you screenshot disappearing photos/videos" in chats. That describes the app before Meta's 2024 change.
| When | What changed |
|---|---|
| February 2018 | Story alert tested |
| June 2018 | Test stopped |
| October 2024 | Disappearing photos blocked |
| October 2026 | Story alert test reported |

Can you see who screenshotted your story?
No. Pallyy notes that people "can see that you viewed, or interacted with their story," and a screenshot leaves no mark. If you'd rather limit who can save your story, choose who sees it first: Close Friends, hiding your story from certain people, or a private account.
