How to Become a UGC Creator: Steps, Rates and Usage Rights
UGC creators get paid to make videos brands post themselves, so you don't need followers. The steps, 2026 rates from $100 to $1,200, and what usage rights add.
A UGC creator gets paid to make short, everyday-style videos and photos for brands, and the brand posts them itself. That's why you don't need a big following. Gigapay's October 2026 guide puts it simply: "A UGC creator is paid for production alone, which is why UGC pricing follows experience, content type, and usage rights instead." To start, you make a few sample videos, put them in a portfolio, and pitch brands or join a UGC marketplace. Collabstr's 2026 report puts the average UGC campaign on its platform at $197.

What does a UGC creator do?
You'll film product videos the way a real customer would. Think unboxings, quick reviews, how-to clips and "what I use every day" videos. Collabstr describes UGC as "videos and photos creators make for a brand to post itself." Gigapay draws the line with influencers: an influencer "is paid for production plus reach," while a UGC creator is paid for the content. Our guide to user-generated content covers both meanings of the word.
How do you become a UGC creator?
- Pick a niche you know. Skincare, pets, tech, food or fitness all work, as long as you're using the products.
- Study what's working. A Reddit creator's first step is to "Research current creators" and look at "how they are laid out."
- Make 3 to 5 sample videos. Use products you've already got. Show a hook, the product in use and a clear ending.
- Build a simple portfolio. One page or a profile with your samples, your niche and how to reach you.
- Join marketplaces or pitch brands. Influee's 2026 guide says to "research the brand" before you reach out.
- Set your rates and usage terms before you start any job.
- Disclose when you post paid content on your own account. The FTC's Endorsement Guides apply to sponsored posts.

Collabstr's 2026 report and Hubfluence as Google showed them, and Gigapay (October 2026), read October 23, 2026.
It's fine to start near the low end, then raise your prices as your portfolio grows. Hubfluence puts the average "around $200 to $250" a video. Gigapay's add-on prices come from Influee, JoinBrands and InfluenceFlow, it says.
What are usage rights, and why do they matter?
Usage rights decide what the brand can do with your video, where and for how long. Gigapay says "The base rate typically covers organic use on one platform for a limited window." Running your video as an ad costs more. Gigapay defines paid usage as "running the content as an ad, which exposes the creator's face to far larger audiences," and cites JoinBrands for paid usage adding "20% to 50% on top of the base rate." It also warns that skipping usage terms is "the single most common source of creator payment disputes."
So you'll want three things in writing every time:
- Where the brand can post it, organic only or paid ads too.
- For how long, like 30, 90 or 365 days.
- What you hand over, the finished video only or the raw footage as well.
Do you need followers to be a UGC creator?
No. Brands post UGC on their own accounts and ads, so they're buying the video, not your audience. Gigapay notes that "follower tiers drive influencer pricing" while UGC pay follows experience and content type. A following helps if you want influencer deals too. Our guides to making money on Pinterest and TikTok's creator marketplace cover those routes. If you post your samples publicly, Hclout's free tier gives 100 free TikTok views or 12 free Instagram likes on a public post, with no password, on the free page. A short Cloudflare check runs before each claim.
