You become an influencer by picking a niche, posting on a schedule you can keep, and growing an audience that actually engages. Then you'll earn from brand deals, affiliate links and platform programs. You don't need a huge following to get paid. inBeat's October 2026 report, built on 1,527 completed paid deals, found nano creators with under 10,000 followers got a median $134 per paid job. And brands want small creators too: Influencer Marketing Hub found 51.43% plan to use more nano creators.

We read inBeat's October 9, 2026 benchmark report through our server, and the other sources as Google showed them, on October 23, 2026.

How do you become an influencer?

  1. Pick a niche you can post about for years. Florida International University's March 2026 tips start with "Identify your content pillars."
  2. Choose one main platform. Start where your kind of content's already doing well, then add a second later.
  3. Post on a steady schedule. On Instagram, Buffer's study of 2.1 million posts found 3 to 5 posts a week more than doubled follower growth compared with once or twice.
  4. Grow likes and comments before reach. Smaller accounts usually engage more. Influencer Marketing Hub says nano influencers "average engagement rates of around 5.60%, with rates declining as audience size increases."
  5. Make a simple media kit. It's a one-page summary of your niche, audience, likes and a few past posts.
  6. Pitch brands and join programs. Amazon's Influencer Program says it accepts "all types of influencers, provided you have a YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok account."
  7. Disclose every paid post. The FTC's Endorsement Guides apply to sponsored content.

Do fake followers hurt your chances?

Yes, brands look for them. inBeat cites Influencer Marketing Hub data that "56.5% of reported issues are fake or bot followers." So it's safest to assume a brand will check your audience before it signs.
