How to Deactivate or Delete Your Instagram Account
Deactivating hides your profile until you log back in, once a week. Deleting is final 30 days after you ask. The steps, and what to save first.
To deactivate or delete Instagram, go to your profile, open the menu and tap Accounts Center. From there, pick Deactivation or deletion. Deactivating is the break option. Instagram's Help Center says "your photos, comments and likes will be hidden until you reactivate it by logging back in" later. Deleting is final 30 days after you ask, and it can take up to 90 days to finish. Want to keep your photos? Download a copy first.
We read Instagram's Help Center as Google shows it, and ESET's guide, on October 23, 2026. We didn't delete an account ourselves.
What's the difference between deactivating and deleting?
| What happens | Deactivate | Delete |
|---|---|---|
| Your profile | Hidden | Hidden, then gone |
| How to undo it | Log back in | Log in within 30 days |
| How often | Once a week | Once |
| Your posts | Kept | Deleted in up to 90 days |
| Messages you sent | Not stated | Stay in inboxes |
Instagram Help Center as Google showed it on October 23, 2026, and ESET's guide of June 18, 2026, for messages.
If you just want a break, deactivate. You can come back any time by logging in, and nothing's lost.
How do you deactivate your Instagram account?
- Open your profile. The Help Center says to "Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right" first.
- Open the menu and tap Accounts Center. On some app versions, the next step is Personal details, and on others, Manage accounts.
- Tap Account ownership and control, then Deactivation or deletion. Pick the account if you have more than one.
- Choose Deactivate account. Instagram's own page lists the rest: "enter the password, select a reason, and tap Deactivate account to confirm" it.
You can only do this once a week. The Threads Help Center page says "You can only deactivate your profile once a week," and Instagram's own topic page says the same of Instagram.
How do you delete your Instagram account permanently?
The path's the same, but you pick Delete account at the end. Before you do, save what you'll want later:
- Download your data. ESET gives the path: Accounts Center, Your information and permissions, Export your information.
- Remove apps that use your Instagram login. ESET suggests revoking "third-party authorized apps that use your Instagram login" before you go.
- Then delete. Your account is hidden right away, and the 30-day clock starts.
What happens after you delete?
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| Right away | Your account is hidden |
| Within 30 days | You can log in to cancel |
| After 30 days | Deletion is permanent |
| Up to 90 days | Instagram finishes deleting |
Instagram Help Center, as Google showed it on October 23, 2026, and ESET's guide.
The Help Center says "It may take up to 90 days to complete the deletion process after it begins," and that copies "may remain after the 90 days in backup storage" for a time. ESET adds that messages you sent "will remain in recipients' inboxes" after you're gone.
Can you delete an Instagram account you can't log into?
No. Instagram's Help Center, on its Facebook mirror, says "For security reasons, we can't delete a profile for you." You'll need to log in to ask for deletion. If the account was taken from you, our guide to an Instagram account that's been hacked covers getting it back first.
Does deleting Instagram delete your Facebook account?
No. ESET answers that one directly: "Will deleting Instagram delete my Facebook account? No." They're separate accounts, even when both sit in one Accounts Center.
Starting over with a new account?
A fresh account starts at zero followers. Our guide to getting your first 1,000 Instagram followers covers the first steps. Hclout's free tier gives 12 free Instagram likes and 100 free Instagram views on a public post, with no password, on the free page.
