How to Go Live on Instagram: Steps and the 1,000 Follower Rule

To go live on Instagram, swipe right in your Feed and scroll to Live at the bottom. Add a title, then tap the round button. Since August 2025, that option only shows up for some accounts. Instagram's Help Center says only users "who have a public account with 1,000 followers or more" can start a Live video. Teen Accounts have Live turned off by default.

We read Instagram's Help Center as Google shows it on October 23, 2026, because Instagram's site shuts out our reader. We didn't go live ourselves.

The rule is fairly new. TechCrunch reported on August 1, 2025 that "Instagram users now need a public account with a minimum of 1,000" followers, as Google shows the article. Before that, any account could go live, public or private.

Some guides add rules of their own. Riverside's says you need "a professional account (Creator or Business)" to go live. The Help Center's note, as Google shows it, names a public account and 1,000 followers. A professional account does matter for streaming from a computer.

How do you go live on Instagram from your phone?

1. Open the camera. Instagram says to "Swipe right anywhere in Feed, then scroll to Live at the bottom" of the screen.
2. Add a title. Tap Title on the left, type it, then tap Add title.
3. Pick your audience. Riverside's guide says it's "set to Public by default," with Practice mode for a test and Close Friends for a small group.
4. Tap the round button. Riverside says Instagram runs "a 3-second timer before your stream officially starts" on screen.
5. End it and keep the replay. Afterward, you can "share a replay or access it in your Live" archive.

How do you go live on Instagram from a computer?

Use Live Producer. Instagram says it lets you "go live on Instagram using streaming software (OBS, Streamlabs, etc.) through a stream key." Restream adds that you'll need a professional account for it. You copy a stream URL and key from Live Producer into your streaming app, then start from there.

You can go live in a broadcast channel too. The Help Center says to go to the channel, "tap Add in the bottom right," and then tap Live.

The last one is easy to miss. If you've "previously posted something that's been removed for going against our Community Standards," Instagram says you "may not be able to start a live video" then.

How long can you go live on Instagram?

Up to 4 hours per stream, according to NearStream's guide. Mashable reported the four-hour limit when Instagram added it, along with an archive "for up to 30 days," as Google shows the story. Adobe Express notes that a saved Live keeps only the video, without its comments, likes or views.

How do you find or watch a live on Instagram?

Look at the Stories row at the top of your Feed. Techlicious says a live account's photo gets a ring "with the word 'Live' on it." Tapping that photo "takes you directly into the stream," it adds.

Can you buy followers to reach 1,000?

Many sites sell Instagram followers, and Hclout, the site you're reading, is one of them. Instagram said in 2018 that it was "removing inauthentic likes, follows and comments" from accounts that use outside apps to grow.
