How to Know if Someone Blocked You on Instagram

Instagram never tells you. The signs, what else each one can mean, the one strong check, and what happens to your messages after a block.

Instagram won't tell you. Its Help Center says "People aren't notified when you block them," and that a blocked person "won't be able to find your profile, posts or story" anymore. So you're left with signs. The strongest one: their profile loads when you're logged out, or in a private browser window, but not in your own app. A deleted or deactivated account vanishes everywhere, so it won't load either way.

We read Instagram's Help Center and topic pages as Google shows them, plus Proton VPN's and MacPaw's guides, on October 23, 2026. We didn't test blocks on an account.

What are the signs someone blocked you?

SignCould also mean
Not in searchDeleted or deactivated
"User not found"Deleted or deactivated
"No Posts Yet"They never posted
Chat shows a blank avatarDeleted or deactivated
Loads logged out onlyA block, most likely

Instagram's topic pages as Google showed them on October 23, 2026, Proton VPN of July 14, 2026, and MacPaw of September 20, 2024.

Most signs have two explanations. MacPaw puts it plainly: "You may think someone has blocked you on Instagram when they've just deactivated or deleted their account." So check before you decide.

How do you check for sure?

  1. Search their exact username in your app. If nothing comes up, keep going.
  2. Open instagram.com/their-username logged out. Use a private browser window. Instagram's topic page says that if it "loads in an incognito browser" but not for you, "the account likely blocked you."
  3. Compare with a friend. If a friend sees the profile and you don't, that points to a block too.
  4. Look at your old chat. Proton VPN says a chat with "a generic avatar without a username," where you can't send, is a likely block.

Proton VPN adds the honest part: "there's only one real way to know for sure: asking them directly," if you're able to.

What does "User not found" mean on Instagram?

It shows when a profile won't open for you. That happens after a block, but also when an account is deleted or deactivated. MacPaw notes that with a deleted or deactivated account, you "won't be able to visit it even if you have the link" at all. If it loads logged out, it's a block. If it doesn't load anywhere, the account's likely gone.

If you block someone, can they still see your messages?

Your old messages stay where they were. SocialBoosting says "Blocking does not erase old messages" and that both people keep the chat history from before the block. New messages can't get through, though. Proton VPN describes the blocked side as a thread where you "can no longer send messages" at all.

What's the difference between block, restrict and mute?

OptionWhat they notice
BlockYour profile disappears
RestrictNothing obvious
MuteNothing

Instagram's Help Center and its November 22, 2024 guide, as Google showed them on October 23, 2026, and Proton VPN.

Restrict is the quiet one. Instagram says "The restricted person won't see when you're online," and you won't get notified about their comments. Proton VPN adds that restricted users "won't know if you've read their messages" either. Mute just hides their posts or stories from your feed.

Did someone remove you, or block you?

Being removed as a follower is different. You'd still find their profile, and on a public account you'd still see their posts. On a private one, you'd have to request to follow again. Our guide to seeing who unfollowed you on Instagram covers tracking follower changes safely.

Frequently asked questions

How do you know if someone blocked you on Instagram?

Check whether their profile loads when you're logged out but not in your app. That's the strongest sign. Instagram never notifies you.

Does Instagram tell someone you blocked them?

No. The Help Center says "People aren't notified when you block them."

Did they block me or delete their account?

Where can I see who I've blocked?

In your settings. Instagram says "You can view a list of accounts you've blocked from your settings."
