Instagram Username Ideas: 100 Ideas and the Rules

100 Instagram username ideas, from aesthetic and cute to business, plus the rules: 30 characters, only letters, numbers, periods and underscores.

A good Instagram username is short, easy to spell and tells people what you post. Instagram's rules are simple. A username can be up to 30 characters. It can "only contain letters, numbers, periods, and underscores," as The Verge and Mashable put it. A handle related to your posts "is your best bet for showing up in relevant searches," Instagram's own search advice says. Below you'll find 100 ideas we came up with, patterns that work with your own name, and how to change yours.

We checked Instagram's and TikTok's rules as Google showed them, and Social Media Today's report on Instagram search through our server, on October 23, 2026.

What are the rules for Instagram usernames?

The Verge, Mashable, Linktree and TikTok Support, "Changing your username," as Google showed them on October 23, 2026.

Your display name is a separate field. That's the name shown above your bio, and on Instagram you can't change it as often as you like. You can update it again once "the 14-day period passes," SocialBee's April 2026 guide says.

How do you pick a good username?

  1. Say what you post. A food account with "eats" or "bakes" in the name explains itself.
  2. Keep it easy to say. If people can't spell it after hearing it once, they won't find you.
  3. Go easy on numbers and underscores. One period or one number is fine. Five is hard to remember.
  4. Use the same name everywhere. Matching names on Instagram and TikTok make you easier to find.
  5. Check that it's free on every app. Do this before you've printed it on anything.

What about TikTok usernames?

TikTok's stricter. TikTok Support says "Your username can be changed once every 30 days" and must have "2 to 24 characters" in it. Your TikTok nickname is separate. You can enter "up to 30 characters" there, and it "can only be changed once every 7 days," TikTok says. Pick a username that fits both apps' limits, and you can use the same one everywhere. "TikTok username ideas" gets about 14,800 searches a month too.

Once your name is set, our Instagram bio guide has 80 bio ideas, and our Instagram captions list has 120 more for your posts.
