What Happened to Fuelgram? It Went Quiet in 2020

Fuelgram ran automated engagement pods for Instagram. Members logged in with their Instagram accounts, and the service traded likes and comments between them. Its website shrank to a stub between December 2019 and July 2020, by the Internet Archive's copies, and today fuelgram.com forwards to a parked-domain page. A seller's blog says Instagram sued it, though we haven't found any record of that suit.

Quick Answer: Fuelgram stopped in 2020. The archive's copies of fuelgram.com are full pages through December 5, 2019, and the next one, from July 3, 2020, is a 1.6 KB stub. We didn't find a closing notice. Lume Social, which sells Powerlikes, wrote in 2024 that Fuelgram "shut down in 2020 after being sued by Instagram." Facebook's October 2020 suits over fake Instagram engagement named Boostgram and Instant-Fans.

What was Fuelgram?

Fuelgram sold three things, by Lume Social's 2024 account: AutoRounds, FuelGroups and PowerLikes. "AutoRounds was their most basic service that would systematically dish out likes onto your most recent post every few hours," the post says. FuelGroups traded likes and comments among members who met set requirements. PowerLikes let you buy likes from the groups without giving any back. It all ran from inside your account, so you'd hand over your login. "After logging in with your username and password, your account would give and receive engagement from the groups," Lume Social wrote.

BuzzFeed News covered it in April 2018. "Fuelgram makes posts appear more popular than they are, tricking Instagram's algorithm into spreading them further, sometimes right into the service's high-profile Explore tab," it wrote, as a Hacker News comment quoted it on May 14, 2018.

When did Fuelgram shut down?

Some time between December 2019 and July 2020. The Internet Archive's copies of fuelgram.com run about 8 to 11 KB from 2016 through December 5, 2019. The next copy, from July 3, 2020, is 1,606 bytes, and no later copy reaches the old size. fuelgram.com's robots rules now keep our reader out of those copies, so we can't quote its last pages.

Older pages, including an earlier version of this one, gave September 2020 as the closing date. We found nothing that backs that date, so we've left it out.

Did Instagram sue Fuelgram?

We couldn't confirm it. Lume Social wrote on January 6, 2024 that Fuelgram "shut down in 2020 after being sued by Instagram," and it named no case. Facebook announced suits "against four individuals providing services intended to artificially inflate likes and followers of Instagram accounts" on October 20, 2020. Those defendants ran boostgram.com and instant-fans.com. A web search on October 24, 2026 turned up no case naming Fuelgram. Our page on what happened to Boostgram covers that suit.

Did Fuelgram's pods work?

For a while, by the research. A team from NYU Tandon and Drexel studied 1.8 million Instagram posts from 111,455 accounts in more than 400 Telegram pods. Seventy percent of those users at least doubled the interaction on their other posts after they began posting in pods, NYU said on April 27, 2020. Pods "involve humans taking action manually, so they are harder to detect," co-author Janith Weerasinghe said. That study looked at Telegram pods in general, so it doesn't measure Fuelgram itself.

Instagram's rules still bar them. Its guidelines ask users to "stay spam-free by not artificially collecting likes, followers, or shares." In 2018, it said it would begin "removing inauthentic likes, follows and comments from accounts that use third-party apps to boost their popularity." That's what Fuelgram's rounds were: a third-party service logged in to your account. Facebook had also suspended several big pod groups in May 2018 "for helping hundreds of thousands of people trick Instagram's algorithm into showing their posts to more people," BuzzFeed reported, as Social Media Today quoted it.

Is Fuelgram coming back?

Nothing suggests it'll return. fuelgram.com forwards to a parked-domain address, and its registration runs out on November 17, 2026. The record was last changed on December 5, 2025.
