YouTube Clipping in 2026: What YouTube Allows a Clip Channel

YouTube now cuts Shorts reach for re-uploaded clips, can strike scraped content and pays nothing on reuploads. What a clip channel may do in 2026.

By Hclout Team6 min read

You can still clip on YouTube, but plain re-uploads now lose reach and can earn strikes. On October 1, 2026, YouTube said it's changing Shorts recommendations to "reduce the reach of content re-uploaded from other creators without adding anything of your own." Its spam policy calls clips re-uploaded with no transformative editing "scraped content." Three strikes in 90 days can end a channel. Clips with your own commentary, edits or story are fine. On October 22, 2026, 35 of 55 live clipping campaigns still took YouTube.

This guide covers the October change and what YouTube counts as original. It also covers strikes, pay and the Clip button. Every rule here comes from YouTube's own pages.

What changed on YouTube in October 2026?

YouTube posted the change in its Help Community on October 1, 2026. It said it's "updating our recommendation systems to further prioritize original content and reduce the reach of content re-uploaded from other creators without adding anything of your own."

It also said what that means for clip pages: "Channels identified as primarily aggregating or re-uploading other creators' videos without significant changes will likely see less distribution within the Shorts feed." And it told clippers what to do instead: add "your own original commentary, unique edits, or storytelling."

YouTube didn't say how much editing is enough, or how a channel can check whether it's affected.

Which YouTube rules apply to clips?

Four separate rules touch a clip channel, and they don't do the same thing.

RuleWhat happensWhat to do
Shorts feed, October 1Less reach for re-uploadsAdd your own edit
Spam policyStrikes for scraped clipsNever re-upload whole
MonetizationNo ad money for reused channelsChange clips a lot
Shorts revenueReupload views earn nothingPost original Shorts

YouTube Help Community post of October 1, 2026; YouTube's spam, monetization and Shorts monetization policies, read October 22, 2026.

The monetization rule looks at your whole channel, and it applies "even if you have permission from the original creator." Copyright is a separate check on top of all four.

What counts as an original clip on YouTube?

YouTube names the same few things in every policy: commentary, real edits, and a story or explanation.

YouTube says this adds somethingYouTube says this doesn't
Your own commentary or reactionA whole clip re-uploaded as is
Clips used for a critical reviewShow moments stitched with no narrative
Substantive edits, audio and effectsMinimal changes called your own
An educational breakdownInterchangeable videos from a template

YouTube's spam policy and its reused content policy, read October 22, 2026.

The spam policy gives a plain example of what it means by scraped content: "A channel that takes popular clips and re-uploads them in their entirety without any transformative editing, reaction, or educational breakdown."

Can you get banned for clipping on YouTube?

Yes, if the clips are scraped. YouTube's spam policy covers "Re-posting material from other websites or platforms, or other videos without adding anything of your own." YouTube may remove the clip and give the channel a warning or a strike. A warning can expire after 90 days if you take its policy training. Break the same rule again inside that window and it can turn into a strike. "If you get 3 strikes within 90 days, your channel may be terminated."

Clipping campaigns add their own rule on top. Content Rewards bans anyone who buys or generates views, likes or followers, and the ban is permanent.

Can you make money from YouTube clips?

There are two ways, and YouTube's rules hit them differently.

  • YouTube's own revenue. A channel of reused clips can't monetize unless it adds real commentary or edits. For Shorts, YouTube doesn't count views on Shorts that reupload other creators' content when it works out your share.
  • Clipping campaigns. Brands pay for views on approved clips, and the campaign sets the rules. 35 of the 55 live campaigns we counted on Content Rewards took YouTube, at a median $1.00 per 1,000 views before a 10% fee.

A campaign clip still lives on your YouTube channel, so YouTube's reach rules apply to it too. Fewer recommendations mean fewer views to be paid for. The full pay numbers are in our guides to making money clipping and clipping campaigns.

Did YouTube remove the Clip button?

YouTube's own help page still describes it. On October 22, 2026, it said clips "are between 5-60 seconds long and are played on a loop from the original video's watch page," that they're public, and that clipping "is turned on by default."

Some people don't see it. In April 2026, users on Reddit and YouTube reported that the Clip button had disappeared for them, and the help page doesn't mention that. A YouTube Clip also stays on the original video's page, so it isn't a Short on your own channel.

How do you clip YouTube videos the right way?

These steps follow YouTube's rules and the campaigns' rules at the same time.

  1. Use footage you're allowed to use. That means a campaign's footage or your own videos.
  2. Add something of yours. Commentary, real edits or a story, every time.
  3. Post it as a Short on your own channel.
  4. Keep the whole channel original. The monetization rule judges the channel as a whole.
  5. Disclose campaign clips with a paid partnership tag or #ad.
  6. Never buy views on an account you use for campaigns.

Frequently asked questions

Is clipping allowed on YouTube?

Yes, when the clip adds something. YouTube asks for "your own original commentary, unique edits, or storytelling." Plain re-uploads get less reach in Shorts, and scraped clips can get strikes.

Can I clip other people's YouTube videos?

Only with real changes, and permission alone doesn't make it monetizable. YouTube's reused content rule applies "even if you have permission from the original creator." In a campaign, use the footage the brand gives you.

Did YouTube remove the Clip feature?

YouTube's help page still describes it on October 22, 2026: clips of 5 to 60 seconds that loop on the original video's page. Users reported in April 2026 that the button vanished for them.

Can you monetize clipping other people's YouTube Shorts?

Not as plain reuploads. YouTube doesn't count views on Shorts that reupload other creators' content for Shorts revenue. Clips with substantive edits or commentary are a different case.

Can a YouTube channel get banned for clips?

Yes. YouTube's spam policy covers scraped content, and "If you get 3 strikes within 90 days, your channel may be terminated."

How long can a YouTube clip be?

YouTube's own Clip feature makes clips of 5 to 60 seconds, according to its help page on October 22, 2026.
