YouTube Thumbnail Size in 2026
YouTube now recommends 3840 x 2160 thumbnails for videos and 2160 x 3840 for Shorts, up to 50 MB on desktop. The old 1280 x 720 rule and every limit.
YouTube now recommends thumbnails at 3840 x 2160 pixels for videos and 2160 x 3840 for Shorts. Its help center asks for "a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels for videos and 2160 x 3840 for Shorts, with a minimum width of 640 pixels for videos and a minimum height of 640 pixels for Shorts." Files can be up to 50 MB from a computer, but only 2 MB from a phone.

About 135,000 people search "youtube thumbnail size" each month. On October 24, 6 of Google's top 10 results for it still gave the older 1280 x 720.
What are YouTube's thumbnail sizes and limits?

| Video | 3840 x 2160 px | 16:9 | 640 px wide |
| Short | 2160 x 3840 px | 9:16 | 640 px tall |
| Podcast playlist | Square | 1:1 | Not stated |
| Uploading from | File size limit |
|---|---|
| A computer | 50 MB for video, Shorts and podcast thumbnails |

YouTube Help, "Add custom thumbnails on YouTube," read October 24, 2026.
Use JPG or PNG. YouTube says thumbnails should "Be uploaded in image formats such as JPG or PNG."
Is 1280 x 720 still right?
It still works, since it's well above the 640-pixel minimum. It's no longer what YouTube recommends, though. Many guides still say "The ideal YouTube thumbnail size is 1280 pixels by 720 pixels" with a 2 MB cap. One ranking guide from May 2026 even says "By Google's own recommendations, your image should be 1280 x 720 pixels." Google's own page now says 3840 x 2160.
The 2 MB limit survives only on phones. On a computer, YouTube allows 50 MB, so a sharp 4K thumbnail is fine. YouTube's reasoning: the thumbnail "should be as large as possible" because "It will be used as the preview image in the embedded player."
What about Shorts thumbnails?
Use 9:16 at 2160 x 3840 pixels. There's a catch: "Custom thumbnails for Shorts are currently only available to add in YouTube Studio on a computer," YouTube says, and you need a verified account.
Watch vertical videos, too. "Vertical videos with 16:9 custom thumbnails will be replaced by an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore, and subscription pages," YouTube says. Your custom image still shows in the watch feed and history.
How do you add a custom thumbnail?
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- From the left menu, select Content (or Shorts at the top, for a Short).
- Open the video's details.
- Under "Thumbnail," click Upload file, or "Get suggestions" to have YouTube suggest one.
- Click SAVE.
Why can't you upload a custom thumbnail?
Usually one of four things. Your account isn't verified yet, since YouTube says you can "upload your own if your account is verified." You're trying a Shorts thumbnail on your phone. You've hit the daily cap: on "Daily custom thumbnail limit reached," YouTube says to "try again in 24 hours." Or a past strike took the feature away. "Repeat offenses may lead to the removal of your custom thumbnail privileges for 30 days," YouTube warns.
What size should the video itself be?
Match your thumbnail to the video. "The standard aspect ratio for YouTube on a computer is 16:9," YouTube says, and it lists these resolutions:
| Quality | Resolution |
|---|---|
| 4320p (8K) | 7680 x 4320 |
| 2160p (4K) | 3840 x 2160 |
| 1440p (2K) | 2560 x 1440 |
| 1080p (HD) | 1920 x 1080 |
| 720p (HD) | 1280 x 720 |
| 480p | 854 x 480 |
YouTube Help, "Video resolution & aspect ratios," read October 24, 2026.
YouTube also asks you to "avoid adding padding or black bars directly to your video," since the player adapts on its own.
Shorts have their own rules: videos "Up to 3 minutes" with "a square or vertical aspect ratio," YouTube says.
