Often, yes, and it's quick. Free tools anyone can run estimate how much of an account's following is fake. Modash, for one, reports a fake-follower rate "Free, with no sign-up needed." The signs those tools and brands read are the ones a curious follower spots too: sudden jumps in the count, few comments for the size of the account, and generic comments. About 27,100 people a month search for an Instagram fake follower checker. Instagram also removes fake and inactive accounts itself, as it did in May 2026.
We read the checkers' pages through our server on October 23, 2026. We didn't run them on any account or test how accurate they are. We run Hclout, which sells followers, so weigh this the way you'd weigh any seller.

Modash's sample report splits a following into "Real People," "Mass Followers," "Influencers," "Suspicious Accounts" and "Bot Accounts." HypeAuditor pitches its checker at vetting "specific accounts that you wish to collaborate with." On Reddit, the old advice still holds, and it's simple. Check the follower graph, and "If it has any jumps," someone added followers fast.
What signs give bought followers away?
- Sudden spikes. Emplifi lists "sudden unexplained follower spikes" first.
- Few comments for the size. It also names "a low comment-to-follower ratio."
- Generic comments. Its list ends with "generic or repetitive comments."
- A step-shaped chart. MakeInfluence says bought followers are "typically caught by a step-shaped growth curve."
Popular Pays gives one company's yardstick for engagement. Divide likes and comments by followers, and it calls 1 to 3% typical for larger accounts and 3 to 6% for smaller ones.

Can Instagram tell?
It removes fake and inactive accounts itself. In May 2026 Meta described "our routine process to remove inactive accounts" and said active followers weren't affected. Instagram also said in 2018 it removes "inauthentic likes, follows and comments from accounts that use third-party apps to boost their popularity."
Why do brand deals raise the stakes?
Because money's involved. Since 2024 the FTC's rule bans buying fake followers when they "misrepresent the buyer's influence or importance for a commercial purpose" and the buyer "knew or should have known" they were fake.
