If your count dropped in early May 2026, you weren't alone. On the night of May 6 into May 7, Instagram removed millions of bot, spam and inactive accounts, and every profile they followed lost them. Meta called it part of "our routine process to remove inactive accounts" and said active followers weren't affected. Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, told users on May 9: "This won't affect your reach." Outside a purge, counts drop for three ordinary reasons: unfollows, deleted or suspended accounts, and bought followers being removed.

Meta's full statement, as indy100 printed it on May 8: "As part of our routine process to remove inactive accounts, some Instagram accounts may have noticed updates to their follower counts. Active followers remain unaffected, and any restored suspended account will be included in the count again after verification."
Purges aren't new. In December 2014 Instagram "removed millions of accounts believed to be posting spam," the BBC reported, and Justin Bieber lost 3.5 million followers.

Some of a drop can come back. Meta says a restored suspended account is "included in the count again after verification." Instagram also said in 2018 that it removes "inauthentic likes, follows and comments from accounts that use third-party apps to boost their popularity."
