How Much Does Spotify Pay per Stream? What Spotify Says

Spotify pays by share of streams, with no set rate. Guides estimate $0.003 to $0.005 a stream. The 1,000-stream rule, 1M-stream math and who gets paid.

Spotify pays royalties by streamshare, a track's share of all streams, and it sets no rate per stream. Guides that work backward from payouts estimate $0.003 to $0.005 a stream. At that rate, 1,000 streams bring $3 to $5, and 1 million bring $3,000 to $5,000. That money goes to the rightsholder first, such as a label or distributor, and the artist's share depends on their deal. Since April 2024, a track also needs 1,000 streams in the last 12 months to earn recorded royalties at all.

We read Spotify for Artists' pages and its Loud & Clear report on October 23, 2026, along with the guides that rank for the question. We run Hclout, which sells Spotify plays, so you'll want to read the part on artificial streams below.

How does Spotify pay artists?

StepWhat Spotify says
Royalty poolAbout two-thirds of music revenue
SplitFour-fifths recording, one-fifth publishing
Your shareYour share of all streams in a country
Who's paidYour label, distributor or publisher

Spotify for Artists, "Royalties Guide," read October 23, 2026.

Spotify gives an example. If an artist "accounts for 1% of all streams in a particular country," the artist's rightsholders "receive 1% of the recording royalties we pay there," and they pay the artist under their own deal. Spotify doesn't believe "a 'per-stream rate' is a meaningful number to analyze," because it's only total payouts divided by total streams.

How much does Spotify pay per stream?

GuidePer stream
Ditto Music, June 2026$0.003 to $0.005
TuneCore, 2026$0.003 to $0.005
artist.tools$0.00238

Each guide's own page or Google's preview of it, read October 23, 2026. All are estimates worked back from payouts, since Spotify publishes no rate.

SoundCampaign's calculator gives the same $0.003 to $0.005 range.

Older figures still rank too. A 2021 Business Insider page cites "around $.00397" from 2017, and a 2023 Reddit post cites "$0.004 per stream" as the average. Both came before Spotify's 2024 rule changes.

How much does Spotify pay for 1,000 or 1 million streams?

StreamsAt $0.003At $0.005
1,000$3$5
10,000$30$50
100,000$300$500
1 million$3,000$5,000

Our arithmetic at the $0.003 to $0.005 range most guides give. It's what the rightsholder gets, before the artist's deal.

TuneCore's own example puts 1,000 streams at $4.37 and 1 million at $4,370. The rate moves with the listener's country and plan. Premium streams "contribute more to the total royalty pool than streams from Free users," Spotify says, because subscriptions bring in more than ads.

How many streams do you need to get paid on Spotify?

You need 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months, per track, to earn recorded royalties. Spotify started the rule in April 2024. Tracks under that line averaged "$0.03 per month," it says, money that rarely cleared distributors' usual withdrawal minimums of $2 to $50.

The rule covers recorded royalties only, and Spotify says the way publishing royalties are calculated hasn't changed. TuneCore says payment starts at "your first 1,500 streams," which doesn't match Spotify's own rule.

How do you make money on Spotify?

Streams are one part. Spotify's guide points to three more:

  • Publishing royalties. Register your songs with a PRO, a mechanical agency or your publisher "so song usage can be tracked and your songwriting royalties paid," it says.
  • Concerts. Spotify lists shows from ticketing partners, and over its last year "228,000 artists had concerts listed on Spotify," by its count.
  • Merch. A Shopify link puts your products on your artist profile.

The totals are large. Spotify says it paid the music industry more than $11 billion in 2025, and more than 1,500 artists made over $1 million in royalties from Spotify alone.

What does Spotify do with artificial streams?

Spotify's rule is plain. When it finds artificial streams, "Those streams do not earn royalties," its guide says, and they don't count toward public numbers or help recommendations. A distributor may also "charge a penalty fee, suspend the user's account, or remove the music" from Spotify.

We run Hclout, which sells Spotify plays, so weigh that rule before you buy plays anywhere. Our guide to free Spotify plays covers the policy in full.
