What does Instagram reward?
"The top three signals that matter most for ranking are watch time, likes and sends," Adam Mosseri, Instagram's head, said, as Social Media Today reported on January 22, 2025. He told creators to "pay close attention to average watch time, likes per reach, and sends per reach." He also said "sends are slightly more important for unconnected content," meaning posts shown to people who don't follow you. So a post that people send to a friend is the one most likely to reach new followers.
Originality counts too. Instagram said in 2024 that "the original content will directly replace the copied version in recommendations." It also shows some Reels less, "such as low-resolution or watermarked reels, reels that are muted or contain borders," as Google shows it. A reposted TikTok with its watermark works against you.

1. Make your profile say what you post

3. Try trial Reels
"Trial reels will be shown to non-followers first," Instagram said when it launched them in December 2024. You can let Instagram share a trial with your followers "based on the views it receives within the first 72 hours." Since July 2025, they're open to public accounts with at least 1,000 followers, Mosseri said. Instagram reported in June 2025 that "40% of creators started posting reels more often and of those who did, 80% saw an increase in reels reach from non-followers."
4. Co-author posts with Collabs
"Instagram first launched Collaborative Posts back in 2021, which gives users the capacity to share credit for a single post with another account," Social Media Today wrote. Since July 2023 you can add up to three collaborators to a post or Reel. Pick accounts whose followers would like your posts too. A paid partnership needs Instagram's Paid Partnership label instead.
5. Use a few hashtags, in the caption
Since December 18, 2025, Instagram has allowed 5 hashtags per post. Metricool's 2026 study found posts with at least one hashtag got 31.70% fewer views than average, so don't count on tags for reach. Put keywords in the caption, since Instagram's search reads captions. "Put keywords and hashtags in the caption, not the comments," Instagram advised in 2021. 6. Post often, and when your followers are online
Posting 3 to 5 times a week grows followers about twice as fast as posting once or twice, Buffer found. For timing, Mosseri said in June 2026 that "There's no universal best time to post," so check your Insights. Our page on the best time to post shows how.
7. Answer comments, and ask questions
Replying to comments lifted engagement by 21% in Buffer's data. Metricool found that posts with a question get 36.70% more comments. Ending a caption with a real question gives people a reason to reply.
